Ghana's Road to 2026: Turbulent Build-Up Sets Stage for Unpredictable World Cup Journey

Ghana has only missed the 2018 World Cup since making its debut in the competition back in 2006, yet a storm cloud looms over the African giant heading into this summer's tournament.

The choice to dismiss manager Otto Addo just 72 days before the World Cup kicked off raised serious questions and concerns. The Black Stars now find themselves shrouded in uncertainty ahead of their opening group fixture against Panama, before facing the daunting challenges of tournament favorites England and Croatia.

Antoine Semenyo stands as a bright spot for what is arguably one of Ghana's weakest squads in recent memory, but the Manchester City forward will require significant contributions from his teammates to avoid a humbling exit.

The Road to the World Cup

Despite failing to secure qualification for the most recent Africa Cup of Nations, Ghana cruised to the top of their World Cup qualifying group. Ten matches yielded eight victories, allowing them to finish six points clear at the top, with veteran striker Jordan Ayew—currently plying his trade in England's second division with Leicester City—leading the way. The 34-year-old contributed seven goals and seven assists as Ghana booked their place at the finals.

Manager: Carlos Queiroz

Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz

Carlos Queiroz has stepped in to guide Ghana through this World Cup campaign, taking over the reins following Addo's dismissal.

The 73-year-old is approaching four decades of managerial experience and is well-acquainted with the pressures of the global stage. Queiroz has guided Portugal and Iran through four separate World Cup campaigns and has a reputation for building disciplined, high-standard squads.

Ghana has the potential to trouble the best sides in the world, provided they can unite and function as a well-organized unit. Queiroz will be well aware that his primary task is to ensure every player in his squad fully embraces his philosophy.

How Ghana Plays

Before Addo's departure, Ghana had been operating in a 3-4-1-2 formation that frequently shifted into a 5-4-1 when facing stronger opposition.

Queiroz has long been regarded as a defensively-minded coach who tends to prioritize not losing over chasing wins. While that mindset may prove sensible against tough group rivals England and Croatia, the prospect of claiming three points against Panama could tempt a more attacking approach—particularly given the wealth of offensive talent and dynamic runners available to him in this Ghana squad.

Ones to Watch

Antoine Semenyo and Abdul Fatawu.

X-Factor: Manchester City's decision to bring Semenyo in for $87 million during the January transfer window highlighted his remarkable rise to the top level of the game. Ghana's ambitions of advancing to the knockout rounds rest heavily on the shoulders of this supremely gifted forward.

Breakout Star: Injuries denied Abdul Fatawu a standout Premier League campaign in 2024–25, but the Leicester City winger is primed to turn heads this summer. Known for thunderous efforts from a deadly left foot, he is an incisive runner with the vision to deliver pinpoint passes.

What Ghana Will Be Wearing

Ghana's World Cup home and away jerseys.

Few kits—if any—will command more attention than Ghana's this summer. An asymmetric design pays tribute to the country's iconic Kente cloth, blending national heritage with a contemporary, bold aesthetic. It is sure to spark debate.

Ghana's away strip features a yellow base complemented by a geometric pattern running across the shirt, drawing inspiration from Accra's Makola Market. A large black star takes center stage.

Ghana's Predicted Starting XI

Ghana's predicted starting XI for the 2026 World Cup.

One of Ghana's most pressing concerns is the imbalance within their squad. There is a wealth of attacking talent, with numerous players representing top European clubs, but the quality drops off considerably further back in the team.

Semenyo is undoubtedly Ghana's focal point in attack, but he will have plenty of support in North America. Tottenham Hotspur's Mohammed Kudus will hopefully arrive fit and in form; the Leicester City pair of Ayew and Fatawu represent genuine threats, and even Athletic Bilbao winger Iñaki Williams is not assured of a starting berth, such is the depth of attacking options available.

There is also quality in the midfield, though depth remains a concern. Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey is the experienced anchor in the center of the park and will be partnered by Real Oviedo's Kwasi Sibo.

However, Ghana is without a world-class goalkeeper and their defensive unit lacks quality, particularly with the injured Mohammed Salisu ruled out of the tournament.

Current Form

Ghana's woeful results under Addo during two March friendlies—a crushing 5–1 defeat away to Austria and a narrow 2–1 loss to Germany—proved to be the breaking point for those overseeing Ghanaian football. They had seen more than enough.

The two remaining warm-up fixtures—against Mexico and Wales—have now taken on enormous significance for Queiroz as he prepares for the real thing in Toronto against Panama on June 17.

What We Can Expect From Ghana Fans

Ghana supporters

Ghana's 2026 World Cup kits offer a glimpse into the spirit of their fanbase: colorful, rooted in tradition and impossible to ignore. Ghana supporters are a fervent group, frequently seen draped in their national colors of green, red and yellow alongside the iconic black star.

The donning of traditional cloth patterns is also a common sight and serves as a link between traveling supporters and their cultural roots. While Ghana fans may not arrive in large numbers in North America this summer, their impact will certainly be felt.

National Expectations

Ghana squad

Given the significant upheaval caused by such a late managerial change and a string of underwhelming performances over the past year, supporters have every right to feel apprehensive. Not only does the Black Stars' squad lack depth and quality in crucial positions, but morale has plummeted to an all-time low following the recent turmoil.

Anything can happen at a World Cup, and the hope is that a new manager will breathe fresh life into an underachieving group. However, there are very real fears that Ghana will fall at the group stage—even with several third-placed sides advancing to the knockout rounds. Based on recent performances, those fears are entirely warranted.
