Gio Reyna Breaks Free: USMNT Star Seals Dramatic Bundesliga Exit from Borussia Dortmund

United States men's national team midfielder Gio Reyna has finalized his transfer from Borussia Dortmund to Borussia Mönchengladbach, both clubs confirmed on Saturday.
The 22-year-old American signed a contract with his new team running until 2028, with reports indicating the club paid over $7 million to secure his services from Dortmund.
Though early speculation linked Reyna with a potential switch to Serie A side Parma, Mönchengladbach emerged as a late suitor and provided an opportunity for regular playing time while remaining in Germany's top flight.
"Gio possesses considerable experience despite being a young talent with great potential," stated Roland Virkus, Mönchengladbach's sporting director. "We've been tracking his progress for some time and believe he has the attributes necessary to contribute to our team. He knows the Bundesliga well and offers versatility across multiple attacking positions."
After arriving at Dortmund as a 16-year-old in 2019, Reyna featured in 147 matches, netting 19 goals and recording 18 assists, while contributing to the club's 2021 DFB-Pokal triumph. His performances earned him recognition with the USMNT, making his international debut before participating in the 2022 FIFA World Cup as a teenager.
During the 2024–25 campaign, Reyna found limited opportunities at Dortmund and was loaned to Premier League side Nottingham Forest, where he appeared in nine league fixtures but failed to make a substantial impression, managing just one assist.
"Borussia represents an excellent, prestigious club," Reyna commented. "I'm thrilled that this move has come together and look forward to meeting everyone here, as well as working together in the matches ahead."
His circumstances at Dortmund remained challenging over the summer, as the club insisted he participate in the FIFA Club World Cup rather than join the USMNT for the Concacaf Gold Cup, before limiting him to just one group stage appearance.
With the USMNT, Reyna has earned 32 caps but has found it difficult to establish a regular position in midfield under previous manager Gregg Berhalter and current boss Mauricio Pochettino.
However, he will reunite with an American colleague and close friend at Borussia Mönchengladbach, linking up with former New York City FC academy partner and USMNT stalwart Joe Scally.
Mönchengladbach kick off their 2025–26 Bundesliga campaign on Sunday against promoted side Hamburg SV.
