Gio Reyna Cleared for Borussia Dortmund Departure as USMNT Star Eyes New Chapter

Giovanni Reyna's future appears to be taking shape as reports suggest Bundesliga club Borussia Mönchengladbach has reached an agreement in principle to acquire the 22-year-old American midfielder from Borussia Dortmund.

Though the transfer remains unconfirmed, Florian Plettenberg indicated that both clubs have agreed in principle to advance to subsequent phases of the transfer negotiations, involving a fee of at least €3 million ($3.5 million) plus additional performance-related clauses.

Reyna, who aspires to play a crucial role for the U.S. men's national team during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, had lost his standing at Dortmund throughout the 2024–25 campaign, finding limited opportunities as his contract nears its conclusion next summer.

During the recent summer window, Reyna was excluded from head coach Mauricio Pochettino's USMNT roster, while Dortmund selected him for their FIFA Club World Cup squad. Nevertheless, Reyna featured in just one match, entering as a substitute during a group stage encounter.

Reyna completed a portion of the 2024–25 campaign on loan with English Premier League club Nottingham Forest, recording 10 appearances after experiencing difficulties securing regular minutes at Dortmund.

Since arriving as a 16-year-old prospect, Reyna has contributed 19 goals and 18 assists across 147 matches for Dortmund, and received his inaugural USMNT selection while representing the Bundesliga powerhouse before making his international debut prior to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

For the USMNT, Reyna has netted eight goals in 32 international appearances, though he faced challenges earning consistent playing time under former head coach Gregg Berhalter, and has not yet secured substantial opportunities under Pochettino's leadership.

Additionally, Gladbach would see him reconnect with USMNT colleague Joe Scally, his former teammate from their youth development days at the New York City FC academy. Scally, an established USMNT player, has earned 21 international caps and recorded 133 appearances for Gladbach.

Following his decline in regular playing time, a transfer has seemed like the logical progression for Reyna, and he will be eager to rediscover his form and establish himself as a consistent performer in Europe's elite competitions once the deal is finalized.

Gladbach begins their 2025–26 Bundesliga campaign on Sunday facing newly promoted Hamburg SV, while Dortmund kicks off their season on Saturday against FC St. Pauli, with Reyna currently remaining on their squad list.
