Greece Takes On Germany in Nations League: Bold Predictions, Key Lineups, and What to Expect

The Jürgen Klopp era finally got off the mark at the third attempt, and now Germany looks to topple early Group A2 frontrunner Greece in the 2026–27 UEFA Nations League.

Klopp's Germany secured a 2–0 win over Serbia in their most recent outing, after being denied a winning start by Xavi Hernández's revamped Netherlands side on the new boss's debut.

The four-time world champions were then beaten by a formidable Greek side that has collected seven points from its opening three matches in League A, following their promotion from League B in 2025.

Ivan Jovanović's squad came from behind to beat Serbia on Matchday 1, then pulled off a historic win in this fixture. Greece had never previously defeated Germany before Dimitrios Kourbelis found the net in the 75th minute of last week's encounter in Augsburg.

Their impressive campaign looked set to get even better when Greece stormed into a 2–0 lead against the Dutch on Matchday 3, but goals from Virgil van Dijk and Tijjani Reijnders saw the points split.

Nevertheless, Jovanović's side leads Group A2 at the halfway stage and is well-placed to advance to the quarterfinals. Germany, meanwhile, still has plenty to prove despite their recent win.

Christos Tzolis, Felix Nmecha

Klopp will be hoping that Germany's Florian Wirtz-driven win over Serbia will help unlock their potential. The new manager isn't expecting near-perfection at this early stage, particularly with his squad divided into two groups. Klopp is still getting acquainted with all the players available to him.

There's every chance the positive energy from the midweek result carries into Sunday's away fixture, but Greece, despite the Netherlands' late comeback last time out, remains a compact, well-organized side that's difficult to break down.

Greek fans are dreaming of another golden generation, having missed out on qualification for the last six major tournaments since reaching the round of 16 at the 2014 World Cup.

Prediction: Greece 0–0 Germany

Greece Predicted Lineup vs. Germany

Greece predicted lineup

Greece has suffered a significant injury setback ahead of Sunday's match, with Arsenal's Christos Tzolis doubtful to play. The winger was substituted off during the 2–2 draw with the Netherlands after picking up a hamstring problem.

In his absence, Jovanović is expected to call upon Georgios Masouras, who made a notable impact after coming on as a substitute in the 17th minute last time out.

Greece's 4-4-2 shape could otherwise remain the same, with Jovanović having found a straightforward system that has produced strong results during this international break. He has a wealth of capable center-forward options, and the competition for places is pushing each of them to perform at their best — so much so that Como's Anastasios Douvikas, the match-winner against Serbia, is finding it hard to earn a starting spot.

Konstantinos Karetsas is one to watch on the right side, even though Borussia Dortmund have urged Greece to limit the 18-year-old's minutes on Sunday.

Greece predicted lineup vs. Germany (4-4-2): Tzolakis; Saliakas, Mavropanos, Retsos, Tsimikas; Karetsas, Kourbelis, Zafeiris, Masouras; Ioannidis, Pavlidis.

Germany Predicted Lineup vs. Greece

Germany predicted lineup

Klopp's choice to divide his large Germany squad into two groups means Greece will face an almost completely different set of players in this reverse fixture.

The visitors are missing Kai Havertz and Jamal Musiala due to injury, but Liverpool fans will have taken great encouragement from Florian Wirtz's display in Germany's victory over Serbia.

"Everyone at Liverpool should be delighted today," Klopp remarked after the Reds' No. 7 netted on the hour mark in Germany's 2–0 win — the first under his management.

FC Köln's Saïd El Mala could have a chance to make his mark in attack, with Jonathan Burkardt potentially leading the line. Wirtz is expected to keep his role as the primary playmaker, while Lennart Karl will be eager to start on the right flank.

Germany predicted lineup vs. Greece (4-2-3-1): Urbig; Treu, Anton, Thiaw, Raum; Pavlović, Engelhardt; Karl, Wirtz, El Mala; Burkardt.
