Haaland Rescues Struggling Man City From Disaster Against Porto

Enzo Maresca's European debut as Manchester City boss ended in a comfortable 2–0 win over Porto, with Erling Haaland netting both goals.

The first half in Portugal was a source of considerable frustration for City, who dominated possession but struggled to convert their chances. Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa was in inspired form, repeatedly denying Haaland, Rayan Cherki and Phil Foden as opportunity after opportunity slipped away.

Haaland wasted a number of openings before the break, but returned after the interval with his trademark clinical edge. A headed goal just two minutes into the second half gave City the lead they craved, and he sealed the three points with a composed finish from inside the box deep into stoppage time.

Maresca will have had reservations about his team's flat showing, which lacked sharpness at crucial moments, but securing a winning start to City's Champions League campaign is ultimately what counts.

One Thing We Can't Ignore

City made nine additions during their summer rebuild, yet only two of those new faces started at the Estádio do Dragão: Ayyoub Bouaddi and Enzo Fernández.

Midfield reinforcement was the central theme of City's summer spending, with $436 million invested in new central players, and Maresca is still working out the optimal setup. Elliot Anderson, who had impressed in the early weeks of the season, was dropped to the bench following the weekend win over Coventry City, handing Bouaddi and Fernández a chance to make their case.

For Bouaddi, it was his first start in City colours, and he showed no trace of anxiety. Much like his performances for Morocco at the World Cup, the teenager is composed in possession and constantly available as an outlet for his teammates. He completed 98% of his passes, contributed five defensive actions and repeatedly evaded Porto's high press. It's remarkable to think he is only 18.

Fernández delivered an equally assured performance, covering ground with energy and purpose. There is clearly more to come from the Argentine, particularly if given greater freedom higher up the pitch, but this was a positive step, and one that brought his first goal contribution of the campaign.

City's midfield is still a developing unit, but it was the brightest element of an otherwise unconvincing night.

GK: Gianluigi Donnarumma—6.7: The Italian's display was marginally more appealing than the garish goalkeeper kit he wore, though there were still some shaky moments that gave Porto a foothold.

RB: Matheus Nunes—7.2: The ex-Sporting CP man was rarely troubled on his first start of the season.

CB: Marc Guéhi—7.8: There were brief concerns over a potential red card when Guéhi's forearm caught Gabri Veiga in the face, though there was clearly no intent from the centre-back.

CB: Rúben Dias—7.3: Porto posed little threat to City's backline, making for a relatively comfortable evening for the skipper.

LB: Joško Gvardiol—7.2: Kept busy by William Gomes and had some uncomfortable moments as a result. Booked following one clash with the Brazilian before being substituted early in the second half.

CM: Ayyoub Bouaddi—7.4: The Moroccan turned in an excellent performance in the engine room, rarely misplacing a pass or being dispossessed.

CM: Enzo Fernández—8.4: Not quite at his best, but the World Cup winner put in a solid shift and contributed a key assist.

RW: Phil Foden—7.1: At his most dangerous when cutting inside, and City looked sharpest when the Englishman had the ball at his feet.

AM: Rayan Cherki—7.2: Despite playing a part in City's opener, this was a relatively subdued outing for Cherki, with his moments of brilliance few and far between.

LW: Antoine Semenyo—6.9: Unusually wasteful in the attacking third and failed to make the most of several good opportunities. Rightly replaced just after the hour mark.

ST: Erling Haaland—8.9: Haaland moved into third place on City's all-time scoring charts with his decisive brace. He needs just 93 more goals to surpass all-time record holder Sergio Agüero.

SUB: Abdukodir Khusanov (48' for Gvardiol)—6.4: Never called upon to push beyond a steady performance.
