Erling Haaland secured his long-term future at Manchester City at the beginning of 2025 by signing an extraordinary 10-year contract extension, and the forward has no intentions of departing the Etihad Stadium, despite loose speculation linking him to Barcelona and Real Madrid.
Haaland has shattered numerous Premier League goalscoring records since arriving in Manchester in 2022, instantly propelling City to a historic treble. The Norwegian netted a record 36 Premier League goals in his debut season at the club, and reached the competition's '100 Club' in record-breaking fashion last December. Haaland's century came in just 111 appearances.
He put pen to paper on a five-year deal with the Citizens upon joining, and speculation about Haaland potentially pursuing even greater ambitions after dominating English football has persisted, even following his contract renewal.
A switch to one of Spain's top two clubs has been considered the only logical next move for Haaland, given his stature in the game.
Haaland Plays Down Transfer Talk Amid La Liga Links

Following last season's letdown, Man City have taken considerable time to find their footing in 2025–26. Haaland was prolific in the opening half of the campaign, but his output has dipped since the new year.
Nevertheless, he remains the frontrunner for the Golden Boot, having notched his 24th Premier League goal of the season last week against Burnley.
Regardless of how the final month of the season unfolds, with City in pursuit of a domestic treble, Haaland has declared that "exciting times" lie ahead at the Etihad, dismissing any transfer speculation.
"I'm super happy, and I'm looking forward to what's next because I think it's exciting times for City as a club and also me as a player," he told ESPN. "I'm looking forward to continuing with City."
Speculation linking Haaland to Barcelona resurfaced during their recent presidential election, when unsuccessful candidate Victor Font claimed he was negotiating a "preferential option" to sign the striker if he chose to leave City. Haaland's agent, Rafaela Pimenta, maintained at the time that her client is "very happy" in Manchester.
As for Real Madrid, who are less in need of a striker than their Clásico counterparts, they were known to have pursued Haaland well before his explosive rise to global stardom. Ongoing media speculation has kept the two parties loosely connected, though there is little concrete evidence that club president Florentino Pérez is actively targeting Norway's standout star ahead of this summer's World Cup.
Haaland Sends Premier League Ominous Warning

Man City never anticipated needing to find a Haaland replacement in 2026, and the Scandinavian striker's recent remarks have provided them with added confidence.
A significant midfield overhaul appears inevitable, with Rodri potentially joining Bernardo Silva in heading for the exit door this summer. Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson is City's primary target, while Chelsea's Enzo Fernández has also been mentioned as a possibility.
There was considerable squad reshuffling last summer, and City made two important signings in January that have helped transform them into potential treble contenders. Alarmingly for rivals, Haaland believes the Citizens are only going to improve further.
"It's been a lot of change now the last couple of years, I would say in the last year," the 25-year-old said.
"There's been lots of players that have been here for a long time. So with new players, it takes time. It's not easy to come into a new league for someone, new country, all of this. It takes time to adapt.
"I think exciting times and I'm looking forward to being a part of it."
