Hansi Flick Issues Urgent Transfer Demand as Barcelona's Season Hangs in Balance
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick disclosed his desire to secure a defensive addition during January, though the German tactician is fully cognizant of the potential obstacles the club may face.
While Barcelona have remained unbeaten in domestic competition since late October, concerns about the squad's defensive depth have emerged in recent weeks. Prior to Barça's 2026 campaign opener in the Catalan derby, Flick was candid about the club's transfer window objectives.
"I believe we aren't prepared at this moment," Flick frankly stated. "However, when you examine our back line, particularly the fullback and center-back positions, I feel we might require an additional player.
"Nevertheless, we must deliberate on this matter, and securing a player of this caliber during the winter window isn't straightforward. Therefore, we'll have to wait and see.
"I maintain confidence and trust that we can accomplish something, but any transfer must be logical and worthwhile."
Andreas Christensen suffered a partial ACL tear in mid-December, leaving Barcelona with only two natural center-backs for their year-end fixture. The club's precarious financial circumstances force them to operate with constraints in the transfer market, though they'll continue evaluating potential opportunities as they emerge.
Hansi Flick: Ronald Araujo's Comeback is "His Decision"

The positive development for Barcelona is Ronald Araújo's return to the squad after being absent for over a month. The club had previously allowed him time away to address personal issues following his dismissal against Chelsea. The Uruguayan defender took part in this week's training sessions, but Flick wants to ensure he's completely prepared before returning to match action.
"The decision rests entirely with him [Araújo]" Flick commented on the Uruguayan's potential comeback. "He's doing well currently, perhaps not at 100% physically, but he's progressing positively.
"He must determine his own pace of return, which is clear to me. However, he's back and has also addressed the team, and what I observe and sense is that his teammates' support is exceptional.
"Therefore, he's returned and remains very valuable to us. He'll receive the time he requires, which is all we can provide, but he's on the right track. "
The significance of Araújo's return for Barcelona cannot be emphasized enough following Christensen's setback. Despite his recent difficulties being well-known, Araújo continues to be a vital leader in Barcelona's locker room, and if he can regain his form, he could be instrumental in the season's second half.
