Harry Kane Storms Into Elite Territory, Matching Messi and Ronaldo in Record-Breaking Feat

Harry Kane Storms Into Elite Territory, Matching Messi and Ronaldo in Record-Breaking Feat

It was yet another moment where Harry Kane slipped under the radar, though certainly not for a lack of effort or impact.

England's understated—and still remarkably underappreciated—all-time leading scorer netted his 90th and 91st goals for the Three Lions, who wrapped up the combined September–October international window with a commanding 3–0 win over Czechia on Tuesday evening.

Thomas Tuchel's squad appears to be hitting its stride following their ill-fated exit in Atlanta, with Kane and the exceptional Jude Bellingham leading the charge in this refined, bold version of the German manager's setup.

After pushing the world champions hard in defeat, England has now beaten a Czechia side in transition twice and handed Croatia the heaviest loss in their storied football history. The performance in that 7–0 rout was undoubtedly the standout display of Tuchel's tenure so far.

And Kane was central throughout. His start to the 2026–27 season had yielded six goals in seven outings—a somewhat modest return compared to last season's remarkable tally of 61 in 51 for Bayern Munich—but the first international break of the campaign offered clear signs that Kane, a Ballon d'Or contender, had lost none of his sharpness.

He heads back to Munich having doubled his goal tally for the season, while also joining a select group of goalscorers during his record-equaling England appearance at Wembley.

Kane has now drawn level with legendary England goalkeeper Peter Shilton on 125 international caps, and will soon surpass a record that has stood since England's exit from Italia '90 via a third-place playoff defeat to the host nation. Few ever imagined Shilton's mark would be challenged.

Kane is set to earn his 126th England cap when Tuchel's men host Croatia at Wembley on Nov. 12, followed by a highly anticipated rematch against Spain just three days later.

Following his brace against Czechia, only Iranian legend Ali Daei has scored more international goals than England's skipper at a superior ratio. Daei's tally of 108 goals ranks only behind Cristiano Ronaldo (146) and Lionel Messi (125), with an average of 0.729 goals per game. Kane's strike rate now stands at 0.728.

The 33-year-old is now among just seven players to have scored 90 or more international goals, surpassing Malaysia's Mokhtar Dahari, who netted 89 times for his nation across a 13-year international career that concluded in 1985.

Kane is closing in on Robert Lewandowski and Romelu Lukaku's respective tallies of 92 and 94, with both players now in the twilight of their careers. As he pursues his own version of a Tom Brady-esque late-career peak, Kane will fancy his chances of overtaking Messi in second place, after the Argentine great bowed out of international football with dignity, scoring for the 125th time in a 3–0 win over Benin.

Ronaldo's extraordinary record will be difficult to surpass, even as the 41-year-old faces an uphill battle to reach the 150-goal mark following his well-publicized falling out with Portugal's new head coach, Jorge Jesus. He currently sits just four goals short.

Among the top 10 international goalscorers in football history, none can match the remarkable scoring ratio of the iconic Ferenc Puskás, who helped transform the game with Hungary's celebrated "Mighty Magyars."

Puskás found the net 84 times in 89 appearances, averaging an extraordinary 0.94 goals per game. He also ranks fourth all-time in international assists with 53.

Harry Kane Has His Eyes Set on Cristiano Ronaldo's Goal Record

Harry Kane, Cristiano Ronaldo

When Kane broke England's all-time scoring record in March 2023, he was averaging 0.67 goals per cap (54 goals in 81 appearances). His rate has climbed significantly since then, and his club form over the past year suggests there is little indication of him slowing down.

He reaffirmed his ambition to continue playing into his 40s after Tuesday's 3–0 win, and addressed the prospect of chasing down Ronaldo's record: "That's maybe the ceiling we're talking about, see how far we can get," England's captain told reporters after the match.

"That is another 50-odd goals. It's an awful long way away right now, but who knows?"

Should Ronaldo not add to his tally for Portugal, Kane would require 56 more goals to surpass his record and reach 147.

At his current rate of 0.729 goals per match, the 33-year-old would need 202 caps in total to hit that milestone—77 more international appearances. Given that England have averaged just under 14 games per year since 2021, Kane would need to feature in every match for at least another five and a half years while maintaining his current scoring rate to eclipse Ronaldo's tally.

It's not entirely beyond the bounds of possibility, but it would demand a superhuman effort from a striker who has rarely been spoken of in the same breath as the two dominant figures of his generation.

In Kane's own words: "It's season by season for me... Let's see if we get to 100 first and then we'll go from there."
