Two months after putting pen to paper, Yan Diomande's time at Real Madrid has yet to truly ignite.
The 19-year-old has been handed just two starts across seven La Liga appearances (both coming in victories against Rayo and Elche) and has clocked a mere 47 minutes in high-profile clashes against Inter Milan and Atlético Madrid.
He finds himself in the peculiar position of being both Madrid's costliest signing in club history and the most understated arrival of the summer window — simultaneously a galáctico and a long-term project.
It was evident that Florentino Pérez required a marquee signing this summer following his re-election to the presidency. After two trophyless years and growing challenges to his authority, the natural response was to assert dominance with a high-profile acquisition. When it became apparent that Michael Olise was unavailable, Pérez shifted his focus to the next best option: Diomande.
Rampant market inflation forced Madrid to shatter their own transfer record to land the Bundesliga Rookie of the Year, but the $140 million (€125 million) fee has generated enormous hype and pressure for a player who only made his professional debut in March 2025.
So far, Madrid supporters have only caught brief glimpses of the four-man attacking unit of Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior, Jude Bellingham and Diomande that generated such excitement during preseason. Meanwhile, the Côte d'Ivoire international has managed just a single assist to his name.
AS reports that José Mourinho is deliberately handling Diomande as "a young player with tremendous potential" rather than an instant-impact superstar.
Diomande Ready for More Starts

When asked about his limited playing time during the international break, Diomande told local broadcaster NCI: "Even though I don't get much game time, I work hard in training, and the sessions are demanding. It means a lot that the coach [Mourinho] believes in me."
He continued: "I thrive under pressure, because it pushes me to exceed my own limits. And I'm also at a club where the standards are incredibly high."
To date, Mourinho has appeared hesitant to deploy Diomande regularly, with Arda Güler — arguably Madrid's standout performer this season — remaining the preferred choice on the right flank.
While dropping the Turkish international to the bench may not be the wisest move, Diomande's adaptability could see him earn more starts on the opposite flank as Madrid continue to struggle for consistency.
Vinícius Jr. has openly acknowledged a dip in confidence since the World Cup and has frequently been on the receiving end of the Bernabéu's frustration at the start of the 2026–27 campaign, with his drawn-out contract renewal saga compounding his poor form.
Diomande was recruited amid mounting concerns that Vinícius Jr. might walk away, with Arsenal circling. The young Ivorian — who featured on both flanks for RB Leipzig last season — was widely regarded as both a contingency plan and a message to Vinícius Jr.'s representatives as negotiations edged toward a standoff.
With the Brazilian ultimately committing to a new deal, it had been anticipated that Diomande would settle into a primary right-wing role within Mourinho's favored 4-2-3-1 setup, though those plans may yet evolve. As a natural right-footer, Diomande remains a viable option on the left side, offering Mourinho an alternative during Vinícius Jr.'s ongoing goal drought.
Madrid Derby Signs

Diomande was afforded just 36 minutes to make an impression in a near-impossible scenario in the Madrid derby — introduced as a substitute with Los Blancos trailing by a goal and reduced to ten men. Nevertheless, the teenager stood out as one of Madrid's few positives at the Metropolitano, operating from the left.
He completed four of six dribble attempts, achieved a 90% pass completion rate, won nine of 12 duels and registered a shot on target during his brief appearance. He looked like Madrid's most dangerous attacking outlet on the day, and continues to be a relentless dribbler for both club and country.
Vinícius, in stark contrast, was largely invisible before being hauled off before the hour mark, with his difficult spell extending into the international break as the Brazilian threatens to become a mounting headache for Mourinho.
While Diomande spent most of last season operating from the right for RB Leipzig, he has firmly established himself as the left-winger for Côte d'Ivoire. He may now be handed the chance to replicate that role for Madrid.
