Havertz Rescues Lackluster Arsenal With Crucial Strike to Seize Edge Over Sporting CP

Arsenal and Sporting CP looked set for a scoreless draw in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal, but Kai Havertz came up with a stunning stoppage-time strike to hand the visitors a 1–0 victory.

It was yet another evening where the Gunners labored in possession, with methodical build-up play appearing to be a deliberate tactic to neutralize their hosts, who boast a formidable record on their own turf.

Mikel Arteta's men, who came into the match on the back of consecutive domestic cup losses, would have settled for heading back to north London next week level at 0–0, but instead snatched a precious away goal through a composed Havertz finish deep into added time.

Aside from Martín Zubimendi's disallowed effort, that was their sole meaningful contribution in the attacking third, while David Raya was called upon to produce several sharp stops — most notably a superb early intervention — to preserve Arsenal's clean sheet.

One Thing We Can't Ignore

Rui Borges, Mikel Arteta

This may have been difficult viewing for those who had to sit through it, but Arsenal will ultimately be delighted with what they accomplished in Lisbon.

Concerns persist in terms of attacking creativity, yet there was a clear defensive improvement from Saturday's FA Cup loss at Southampton, where they were repeatedly exposed on the break.

This is a Sporting side that had won all five of their home Champions League fixtures heading into this match, having knocked out holders Paris Saint-Germain during the league phase. The last visiting team to leave the Alvalade with anything other than a defeat was Primeira Liga leaders Porto back in August. They had reeled off a club-record 17 consecutive home wins before Arsenal arrived.

So, while some fans may have been frustrated by yet another labored display in possession lacking in creativity, Havertz's goal has completely changed the story. Suddenly, the talk will be of a textbook away performance in the knockout rounds of Europe's most prestigious club competition.

Their mental fortitude deserves recognition after a grueling few weeks.

Arsenal Player Ratings vs. Sporting CP (4-2-3-1)

David Raya

*Ratings provided by FotMob*

GK: David Raya—8.9: The Spaniard's value to this Arsenal side was highlighted by a breathtaking fingertip save to deny Maxi Araújo in the early minutes. It's hard to say how differently this match would have unfolded had Sporting taken the lead so soon.

RB: Ben White—7.4: Sporting found much of their attacking success by exploiting White's occasionally loose positioning with precise long balls. He offered little in the way of attacking threat.

CB: William Saliba—7.5: Luis Suárez proved a handful for Saliba, who was drawn into fouls and occasionally muscled off the ball by the energetic Colombian striker.

CB: Gabriel—7.0: Exchanged words with South American counterpart Suárez, though the two didn't directly contest much. Gabriel wasn't overly tested overall, but played a key role in Arsenal's disallowed opener.

LB: Riccardo Calafiori—7.1: The Italian's diagonal runs at least injected some unpredictability into Arsenal's possession play. Solid defensively throughout.

CM: Martin Zubímendi—6.9: Believed he had curled in a fine effort to give Arsenal the lead, only for it to be ruled out for offside in the build-up. Zubimendi helped the visitors find their footing, though others took on greater responsibility.

CM: Declan Rice—8.1: A timely return to Arsenal's engine room, Rice did more than his two midfield partners to help the visitors establish themselves, frequently threading passes through Sporting's lines.

CM: Martin Ødegaard—7.1: Plenty of flair on display, but not enough end product. That said, Ødegaard showed enough brightness and continued to probe Sporting's defensive shape.

RW: Noni Madueke—7.3: Provoked the hot-headed Araújo into multiple fouls and held his own in the individual duel with the Uruguayan. His final delivery let him down, however.

ST: Viktor Gyökeres—6.3: A tough return to his former club for Gyökeres, who was kept firmly in check by two well-organized center backs who know his game inside out.

LW: Leandro Trossard—7.2: Largely anonymous once again, aside from one inviting cross that forced goalkeeper Rui Silva into a scrambling save.

SUB: Kai Havertz (70' for Ødegaard)—7.1: What a finish to seal it in the dying moments. Drifting in unmarked, it had all the hallmarks of a classic Havertz goal.

SUB: Max Dowman (76' for Madueke)—6.3: Arsenal's prolific record-breaker didn't prove to be the decisive impact substitute, but he still gets the crowd on their feet whenever the ball finds him.

SUB: Gabriel Martinelli (76' for Trossard)—7.0: Martinelli's assist for the winning goal was outstanding, and exactly the kind of contribution he hasn't produced nearly enough of over the last couple of seasons.

Subs not used: Kepa Arrizabalaga (GK), Khari Ranson (GK), Cristhian Mosquera, Marli Salmon, Andre Harriman-Annous, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Christian Nørgaard, Gabriel Jesus.
