Hector Herrera's Shocking Return: Inside the Dramatic Comeback to Houston Dynamo

Hector Herrera's Shocking Return: Inside the Dramatic Comeback to Houston Dynamo

Héctor Herrera departed Houston Dynamo under unfortunate circumstances after directing spit toward a match official during a 2024 MLS Cup playoff encounter with Seattle Sounders FC. Following a year-long absence, he has rejoined the squad after agreeing to a one-year contract extending through the 2026 campaign.

At 35 years of age, the Mexican national team player had no desire to depart the organization. His contract option remained unexercised in 2024 due to the spitting controversy, prompting his return to Mexico where he competed for Liga MX club Deportivo Toluca during 2025.

"I believe the final impression people retain of me clearly wasn't positive," Herrera shared with The Houston Chronicle. "It's not the behavior I wish to demonstrate for youth, my child, or anyone else.

"Those familiar with me understand that wasn't my true character, that it represented a moment of emotional collapse, and naturally, I aim to alter that perception. Most importantly, I want to enhance the organization's reputation, restore it to prominence, and transform it into a competitive championship team."

Herrera's comeback to Houston following 14 months surprised many observers, considering his departure circumstances and limited participation in 2024, appearing in only 24 of Houston's 36 matches throughout the MLS regular season and playoff rounds.

However, with his child enrolled in the Dynamo Academy and his family remaining local, both he and the organization reached agreement on a one-year contract, securing his services at reduced compensation while providing Houston greater Designated Player roster flexibility.

"It represents an honor to welcome Héctor back to his Houston home," Dynamo general manager Pat Onstad commented regarding Herrera, who captured Clausura and Apertura 2025 championships with Toluca while featuring in just 34 matches.

"Though his responsibilities will adapt, we recognize Héctor's guidance and championship mindset will raise our organization's expectations. He returns with profound ties to the community and clear comprehension of requirements for bringing silverware back to Houston."

Herrera received a three-match ban for the spitting controversy, but will not serve it with Houston. Per the organization, he completed the suspension during Liga MX fixtures, despite the incident taking place in MLS competition.

With Herrera's reduced salary arrangement, the Dynamo enhanced their squad further, approaching a DP agreement with former LAFC standout Mateusz Bogusz for a three-year period, returning the Polish playmaker to MLS following his Liga MX stint with Cruz Azul. Simultaneously, they secured former Santos FC midfielder Guilherme through 2027–28, who will also fill a DP position.

"My family resides here and finds happiness in this community. The relationship between myself and the organization did not conclude ideally or as I desired. This served as motivation for my return, to properly conclude this chapter and assist the team in winning championships," Herrera stated.

Following their absence from the 2025 playoffs, Houston aims to capitalize on their progress in 2026, with their season kickoff scheduled for Feb. 21 against Chicago Fire FC.
