Chelsea have remarkably managed to pocket potentially as much as $27.2 million (£20 million) in profit from the sale of Liam Delap to Nottingham Forest.
Delap's time at Chelsea lasted just over a year, yet that was sufficient to push him between both ends of the emotional spectrum among supporters.
After netting a scrappy goal in only his third appearance for the club, Delap was quickly hailed as the striker to finally break Chelsea's notorious No. 9 curse. The 23-year-old would find the net just twice more across 44 subsequent outings, leaving for Forest with a disappointing tally of one goal in 28 Premier League appearances for the Blues. Delap, it should not be forgotten, scored a dozen times for an Ipswich Town side that was relegated in 2025.
Liam Delap's Dismal Chelsea Record
A serious hamstring injury sustained on his full home debut back in August derailed his opening months in west London. By the time he returned to action in late October during a Carabao Cup tie against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Delap drew the fury of then-manager Enzo Maresca by picking up two yellow cards within seven minutes.
The Italian head coach, who had previously overseen Delap's prolific displays in Manchester City's youth setup, branded the "very stupid" dismissal as "embarrassing."
"Liam is a player who, when he's on the pitch, is probably playing the game for himself and struggles to realize and listen to those around him," Maresca bluntly concluded.
The subsequent arrival of Liam Rosenior, Delap's former boss at Hull City, failed to spark any improvement in form. Yet, despite all those warning signs, Chelsea still managed to secure a $68 million (£50 million) package from Forest, with $61.2 million (£45 million) guaranteed. Even after just three goals in one season, Chelsea's $40.8 million (£30 million) investment has clearly paid dividends.

Chelsea were part of a frantic race for Delap's signature last summer. The likes of Manchester United, Everton and virtually every other club exploring the possibility of signing a striker were competing for what appeared to be an obvious deal.
While the potential for Delap to develop into a top-level striker was naturally a factor, the terms of a possible deal were simply too attractive to pass up. Thanks to a clause in his Ipswich contract triggered by the club's relegation, the center forward was available for a fixed fee of $40.8 million. At 22 years old, holding an English passport and boasting a double-digit Premier League goal haul, Delap seemed drastically undervalued.
For context, that same summer Newcastle signed 23-year-old Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart following one 12-goal Bundesliga campaign, yet he cost upwards of $87.5 million — more than double what Chelsea paid for Delap.

The transfer market has only continued to inflate over the following 12 months. Sávio's move to Tottenham Hotspur serves as a compelling, if extreme, illustration. Last summer, the Brazilian winger formerly known as Savinho was available for around $67 million (£50 million at the time), per BBC Sport. A year on, the same player joined Spurs in a deal worth $116 million. During that intervening season, Sávio managed a grand total of four goals — though, as Delap would likely acknowledge, not everyone can reach that benchmark.
Forest would also contend that Delap's underwhelming Chelsea goal return comes with important context. The youngster was far from the only one to underperform at the club last term, as three different head coaches struggled to maintain control of a turbulent dressing room. Even the relatively consistent João Pedro went eight straight games without a single shot on target at one point last season.
Whether Forest manager Oliver Glasner can unlock better performances from Delap remains to be seen, but one thing is clear — it was a financially rewarding deal for Chelsea.
