Manchester United secured Brazilian midfielder Éderson as their opening signing of the summer transfer window, but he's far from the last, with at least four additional arrivals reportedly expected at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils acted swiftly, acquiring Éderson from Atalanta for a fixed fee of $47 million (£35 million, €40.5 million), plus up to $5 million (£4 million, €4.5 million) in potential add-ons. The Brazilian is set to complete a medical in the coming weeks before officially penning a four-year contract—with an option for a fifth year—as Man Utd land their long-pursued target to fill the void left by the departing Casemiro.
Éderson marks Man Utd's first acquisition of the Michael Carrick era, but he's merely the beginning of what promises to be a hectic summer for the Red Devils, who are targeting four additional reinforcements ahead of 2026–27, according to The Times.
The atmosphere around Man Utd shifted considerably following an impressive second half of the season under Carrick, raising expectations heading into 2026–27. To mount a genuine challenge for trophies, bolstering the squad is essential, and United have identified specific areas they are eager to address.
The Positions Man Utd Are Looking To Reinforce

Landing a midfield replacement for Casemiro was United's most pressing priority, though Éderson may not be the only central midfielder to arrive this summer, particularly if Manuel Ugarte's anticipated exit goes through. Adam Wharton, Sandro Tonali and Matheus Fernandes are among the Premier League midfielders being linked with a switch to Old Trafford.
The entire left side of the pitch is another area United are looking to strengthen this summer, per The Times. Newcastle left back Lewis Hall remains near the top of United's wish list, while recruiting a new left winger is also a priority. PSG's Bradley Barcola and AC Milan's Rafael Leão have been identified as potential options.
Bringing in a new center forward to provide depth behind Benjamin Šeško could also be in the works. Joshua Zirkzee is anticipated to depart, and while United received $58.1 million (£43.2 million) from Rasmus Højlund's permanent transfer to Napoli—which helped finance the Éderson deal—it has left them light in the striker department.
Additional market opportunities will be explored, but The Times notes that the Red Devils will also look to their academy and hand some promising youngsters the opportunity to shine in what will be a demanding campaign that includes a return to Champions League football.
Man Utd CEO Gives Insight to Summer Transfer Strategy

The Red Devils wrapped up five signings during the 2025 summer window. Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Senne Lammens and Šeško all made meaningful contributions in their first season, while teenager Diego León is considered one to watch going forward.
It proved to be a fruitful window for Man Utd overall, and Chief Executive Officer Omar Berrada recently confirmed the club intends to follow the same blueprint during the 2026 summer window.
"I think the template for what we did last summer will be replicated in many ways," Berrada told the Inside Carrington Podcast. "You always go into a window and you don't know how you're going to come out of it. But you have to be really prepared, you have to have a clear plan, you have to know exactly what positions you're looking to strengthen.

"And you also have to be prepared for any eventualities. There could be exits that we weren't expecting, there could be opportunities in the market. So, we have to be ready, we have to be agile and flexible.
"But we have a clear plan, and what we saw last season is a good way forward. We want a mix of experience and youth. We want a mix of players that have demonstrated they can perform in the Premier League and perhaps also with players that are doing very well outside of the Premier League.
"But we will always do it [transfers] within our terms and ensuring that whatever decision we take is not just for the short term but also for the long term.
"We have a plan, we know what we can invest, and we have to stick to that."
With Berrada stating that Man Utd's 2025 summer signings "worked out really well" and confirming the intention to mirror that approach a year on, there appears to be substance to reports that Éderson could be the first of five total additions to call Old Trafford home this summer.
