How Ibrahima Konate Could Transform Real Madrid's Defense

Ibrahima Konaté is reportedly "very close" to completing a move to Real Madrid after leaving Liverpool as a free agent.

The French centre-back's situation has been something of an unpredictable journey over the past several weeks.

Konaté had widely been anticipated to depart Liverpool this summer as his contract neared its end with little progress on an extension. Yet back in April, he caught journalists off guard by stating he was "close to an agreement" on prolonging his time at Anfield.

As time passed with no official announcement, Konaté eventually bid farewell on Monday via social media: "I will carry Liverpool with me wherever I go... but it's time for a new challenge and a new chapter."

AS reports that Florentino Pérez is "very close to securing the centre-back's arrival should he win the elections," and has put forward a four-year contract for the 27-year-old.

A verbal agreement between the club and player is already in place, with the deal contingent on Pérez's re-election on June 7, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Why Are Real Madrid Interested in Konate?

Pursuing Konaté represents a clear market opportunity for Real Madrid, who have become adept at landing top talent without paying a transfer fee to another club.

David Alaba, Antonio Rüdiger and Kylian Mbappé have all arrived on free transfers in recent years, while Madrid paid €10 million ($11.5 million) to fast-track the signing of Trent Alexander-Arnold ahead of last summer's Club World Cup, with the right-back's Liverpool deal nearly expired.

Konaté fits a familiar pattern of targeting elite talent available at no cost. Given his age and experience, even if things didn't pan out at Madrid, he would still hold considerable resale value.

Beyond financial logic, there is also a genuine positional need for centre-backs within Madrid's squad.

Alaba departed at the end of the season, while Raúl Asencio's future remains uncertain and there is speculation the 23-year-old could be offloaded this summer.

Edér Militão's recurring injury problems make him an unreliable option across a full campaign, and Antonio Rüdiger's workload also requires careful management.

The club's other senior centre-back, Dean Huijsen, continues to be highly regarded but was omitted from Spain's World Cup squad following a mixed debut season at the Bernabéu.

What are Konaté's Strengths?

Konaté would bring Madrid substantial top-flight experience, having won the Premier League and spent five years at Liverpool while earning 27 international caps for France.

Standing at 6'5", the former RB Leipzig man is a physically dominant defender with an exceptional aerial presence—throughout his five Premier League seasons, Konaté has consistently ranked among the best for aerial duels won—and impressive recovery speed.

In the 2025–26 season, no Liverpool defender surpassed him for tackles, interceptions or blocked crosses.

Konaté is regarded as a well-liked figure in Liverpool's dressing room, and he already shares strong bonds with several Madrid players. Mbappé is a close friend and has spoken positively about his international teammate in informal transfer discussions, per AS.

He would also be familiar with the likes of Aurélien Tchouaméni and—if they remain at the club past the summer—Eduardo Camavinga and Ferland Mendy. Perhaps most notably, though, is Konaté's existing relationship with Alexander-Arnold.

The pair shared four seasons together at Anfield, with Konaté's physicality enabling him to cover the ground between right centre-back and right-back as his teammate pushed forward into attack.

Without a right-sided partner capable of covering space as effectively as Konaté, Alexander-Arnold's defensive vulnerabilities have been more frequently exposed in the Spanish capital.

Signing Konaté could reunite a partnership that played a key role in delivering Liverpool's second Premier League title in 35 years.

What Are Konaté's Weaknesses?

Despite his evident physical qualities, Konaté has not always been the most durable of players.

Although he featured in 36 of Liverpool's 38 Premier League fixtures in 2025–26, his injury record in previous seasons has raised concerns.

He missed eight matches during the title-winning 2024–25 campaign and seven the season prior. While his availability has improved of late, his history of physical setbacks could be a warning sign for Madrid as they seek to address fitness problems in their defence rather than compound them.

Furthermore, Konaté is coming off what may have been his most difficult season, with Liverpool conceding 53 Premier League goals as they finished a disappointing fifth.

Konaté was among those whose performances dropped significantly during Arne Slot's troubled second campaign.

Never the most assured with the ball at his feet, Konaté's displays were inconsistent at best in 2025–26, with Slot describing his centre-back as being "a bit too much at the crime scene" following a 3–3 draw with Leeds United in December.

There were, however, mitigating circumstances to consider, not least the passing of Konaté's father earlier this year.

With contract talks stalling last spring, The Athletic reports that Liverpool "did not believe that Konaté was worth what it would have cost to keep him and decided that their resources would be better spent elsewhere."

Ultimately, Madrid may have concluded that they are undeterred by his wage demands and are prepared to bet that Konaté's difficult season was merely an anomaly.
