How Liverpool's Summer Signings Have Stacked Up So Far This Season

Although Liverpool fell short of replicating last summer's record-breaking expenditure, the club still invested heavily during the most recent transfer window.

To strengthen Andoni Iraola's squad ahead of his first season in charge, the Reds splashed $306 million reinforcing both their backline and attack, though only four senior signings were completed—setting aside youngsters Luca Brughmans and Ifeanyi Ndukwe, who both promptly headed out on loan.

Those new arrivals have helped Iraola engineer an unbeaten start to his tenure, producing four wins and three draws before the three-week international break.

4. Bradley Barcola

Bradley Barcola was Liverpool's marquee signing of the summer and the second-costliest transfer in history, though there are extenuating circumstances that account for his underwhelming debut in red.

The French winger arrived from Paris Saint-Germain late in the window, costing the Reds up to £123 million ($163 million) including add-ons, and as a result missed preseason preparations under Iraola.

Having returned late from the World Cup and turned down a contract extension at PSG, Barcola was also left out of early squads for the European champions, featuring in neither friendlies nor competitive matches before his move.

This has led to a slow beginning to his debut campaign, with no goal contributions across his five outings. Nevertheless, his impact will inevitably grow as he sharpens his match fitness, and that will pose a serious threat to Premier League defenses.

3. Victor Muñoz

Victor Muñoz technically joined Liverpool as a World Cup winner, despite not featuring for a single minute during Spain's title-winning run. His place in Luis de la Fuente's squad was a reward for an outstanding season at Osasuna, and the youngster has carried that momentum to Merseyside.

While Muñoz hasn't quite reached the heights shown by fellow winger Cody Gakpo in the early stages of the season, the 23-year-old has been Liverpool's second-most dangerous wide player.

2. Ronald Araújo

Liverpool supporters had legitimate concerns when Ronald Araújo was brought in from Barcelona as short-term defensive cover. The Uruguayan's loan move followed a difficult spell with the La Liga giants, during which he found himself on the fringes of the squad.

Yet the inconsistency that drew criticism during his time in Catalonia has been nowhere to be seen in his early Liverpool displays.

Araújo has been deployed mainly at right back by Iraola, filling in for the below-par performances of Jeremie Frimpong. Though it isn't his natural position, the 27-year-old has thrived thanks to his combination of physicality, strength and pace.

A series of impressive and dependable defensive showings have cemented his place at right back going forward, and he even contributed a sublime assist in the Champions League, with his delicate flick sparking Liverpool's comeback against Atlético Madrid.

World Cup-winning Frenchman Christophe Dugarry called Liverpool "fools" for paying £60 million ($79.4 million) for Jérémy Jacquet. Judging by the 21-year-old's opening performances at Anfield, Rennes could have demanded an even higher fee.

Jacquet had accumulated just 58 senior appearances before joining the Reds, yet he already looks like one of Europe's finest center backs based on his first seven outings for Liverpool.

It is, of course, still very early in the youngster's career, but he already possesses every quality demanded of a modern Premier League defender—physicality, pace, intelligence, exceptional vision and a dominant aerial game.
