Marcus Rashford has returned to Manchester United.
The English forward's time at Old Trafford seemed finished last summer when he joined FC Barcelona on a loan deal, with the Spanish club holding a below-market option to sign him permanently following a productive season that produced 28 combined goals and assists.
However, Barcelona chose to let both the purchase option and release clause in Rashford's contract lapse, opting instead to bring in younger talents Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi. United boss Michael Carrick has since confirmed that the winger will rejoin training with his hometown club for the upcoming leg of their summer tour across northern Europe.
"I've played with him. I was in the match when he made his debut, so there's a connection there," Carrick said following Saturday's 1–1 stalemate with Paris Saint-Germain. "We'll have a full squad this week in Dublin. We head straight there and have a few days where the entire group comes back together.
"Marcus is part of that, along with Kobbie [Mainoo] and Lisandro [Martínez]. We're looking forward to having them back."
For many United supporters, seeing Rashford back in a Manchester United kit may require some adjustment. It has been quite some time since the academy product last wore the iconic red shirt.
When Did Rashford Last Play for Man Utd?
Marcus Rashford's final appearance for Manchester United came against Viktoria Plzeň on Dec. 12, 2024.
The Europa League fixture was held at the Doosan Arena in Plzeň, Czechia, with Rashford deployed as a second striker directly behind Joshua Zirkzee.
It was an underwhelming evening for the Englishman, who failed to leave his mark on the game and was substituted off in the 56th minute—just eight minutes after Plzeň had shocked United by going ahead through Matěj Vydra.
His replacement, Rasmus Højlund, turned out to be the match-winner. The Danish forward, who has since departed United for Napoli, netted shortly after entering the pitch, then struck again in the 88th minute to complete United's turnaround and claim all three points for the Red Devils.
What Happened After Rashford's Last Man Utd Game?
In the wake of the Viktoria Plzeň defeat, Rashford's Manchester United career was essentially put on ice under then-manager Ruben Amorim.
He was omitted from the squad for the Manchester derby against City just three days later, with Amorim making it clear the exclusion was not disciplinary in nature. Rather, the manager stated the call was his own as he evaluated the circumstances. Rashford responded shortly after by publicly declaring he was "ready for a new challenge."
His standing at the club did not improve. Rashford was left out of the majority of United's matchday squads over the weeks that followed, missing over 10 fixtures and making just a single bench appearance as an unused substitute. When pressed on the ongoing absence, Amorim stated he would only select players he felt were giving their full commitment on a daily basis.

A loan switch to Aston Villa came in February, handing Rashford a chance to rediscover his form under Unai Emery. He put in a respectable stint at Villa Park, netting four goals and contributing six assists across 17 outings.
That form was enough to secure him a move to Barcelona the following summer. Rashford enjoyed an even more fruitful spell during his second loan, registering 14 goals and 14 assists in 49 appearances as Barcelona claimed La Liga and the Supercopa de España.
His defining moment arrived in El Clásico, when he converted a free kick in a 2–0 win over Real Madrid. The victory played a key role in helping Barcelona clinch their 29th La Liga crown—and handed Rashford his first-ever league title.
