If the Nations League has demonstrated anything, it's that teams grow stronger by facing opponents of comparable quality. Rather than brushing aside weaker sides or being overwhelmed by far superior teams, nations have been able to gradually toughen themselves through these evenly matched contests.
So, with all of that unfolding in the background, it's somewhat puzzling that Manchester United have used this international break as a chance to reportedly organize a friendly against Lausanne-Sport, the club currently sitting at the foot of the Swiss top division.
United clearly have plenty of room for improvement. Michael Carrick has overseen just one Premier League victory, accumulating fewer points than two of the newly promoted sides despite having what was considered one of the more favorable fixture schedules.
At this stage, United could benefit simply from getting a win on the board, even if it comes behind closed doors against a side fighting to avoid relegation from Switzerland's top flight, as Mike McGrath of The Telegraph has reported. Nevertheless, this particular friendly owes its existence to the polarizing figure of Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
The Link Between Lausanne-Sport and Man Utd
Ratcliffe's INEOS holds a stake in both clubs, making any fixture straightforward to arrange. It also complicates transfers due to UEFA's regulations on related parties, which is why United were prevented from signing Jean-Clair Todibo in 2024 from Nice, another club operating under Ratcliffe's ownership.
INEOS acquired Lausanne in 2017 as the company's first foray into football and, as Ratcliffe has since reluctantly acknowledged, "made some mistakes." Altering the club's badge to align with INEOS's corporate logo was particularly poorly received, and the club has suffered multiple relegations over the years.
Lausanne have returned to the top tier but find themselves rooted to the bottom with just one win from nine league outings. Head coach Luka Elsner described it as a "state of emergency" and cautioned: "We need to be concerned."
Which Players Will Be Available for Man Utd Friendly?
Carrick has a limited pool of players to call upon given the volume of internationals and injury absentees during this window.
There is a group of English players passed over by Thomas Tuchel who could earn some minutes against Lausanne. Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire were both left out of the autumn international squad. Kobbie Mainoo and Marcus Rashford were selected but had to withdraw due to minor injuries. It remains unclear whether they will be sufficiently fit for this low-key friendly.
Benjamin Šeško and Patrick Dorgu are also managing physical concerns, but Matheus Cunha should be eager to feature after being unexpectedly left out of Carlo Ancelotti's revamped Brazil squad. Carrick will likely bolster his available senior players with academy prospects, while Carlos Baleba could also make his unofficial debut having finally recovered from an injury that has postponed his competitive bow.
