How Man Utd's Bold $95.5 Million Bet on Carlos Baleba Rewards Those Who Wait

Manchester United have secured Carlos Baleba as the club's fourth senior signing of the summer transfer window, joining Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Karl Darlow in arriving at Old Trafford.

The Cameroonian international has arrived from Brighton & Hove Albion, where he built a reputation as one of the Premier League's most promising defensive midfield talents. At just 22 years old, Baleba represents a signing for both now and the years ahead.

His new deal runs through the summer of 2031 and includes an option to extend by an additional year.

Baleba is immediately available to feature in his new side's upcoming home fixture against Ipswich Town on Saturday. However, having missed Brighton's preseason and their Premier League opener against Aston Villa due to an ankle problem, he has not seen competitive action since facing United on May 24, raising serious doubts about his fitness and readiness to play right away.

Despite the earlier midfield additions of Santos and Tielemans, both of whom started United's opening Premier League loss to Hull City on Saturday, a true like-for-like replacement for the departed Casemiro had still been missing. The squad's other midfielders tend to be more attack-minded, making Baleba's athletic and combative style a valuable counterbalance.

Squad depth has also been bolstered with his arrival, giving Michael Carrick five options—Baleba, Santos, Tielemans, Kobbie Mainoo and Tyler Fletcher—for two central midfield spots in the starting XI. During the second half of last season, the manager relied almost exclusively on Casemiro and Mainoo in those roles. Manuel Ugarte had been the main backup but is currently sidelined through injury.

A Lesson in Patience

Reports indicate that United will pay $88.7 million (£65 million) guaranteed for Baleba, with a further $6.8 million (£5 million) available in conditional add-ons. In total, the deal could reach $95.5 million (£70 million), making him the seventh-most expensive player ever purchased by the club.

However, when United first showed interest in the midfielder around this time last year, the situation looked very different. Baleba was coming off a breakthrough campaign and Brighton were demanding approximately $136.4 million (£100 million)—close to the fee the Seagulls had received when selling Moisés Caicedo to Chelsea back in 2022.

At that valuation, he would have eclipsed Paul Pogba as the club's priciest ever acquisition, rather than landing just above Benjamin Šeško on the list.

United, who chose not to match Tottenham Hotspur's readiness to spend heavily on Matheus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali earlier this summer—the two players cost a combined $252.4 million (£185 million)—have reaped the rewards of their patience.

Holding off on a more expensive move for Baleba last summer, which allowed Casemiro the opportunity to deliver a strong farewell season before departing, turned out to be a shrewd decision.

There is very little time left before the transfer window shuts on Sept. 1. Yet while United have now wrapped up their planned midfield overhaul with the addition of Baleba, there remain other areas of the squad that could still benefit from reinforcement before the deadline.

Left back is a position that currently lacks adequate depth and cover. Luke Shaw featured in every Premier League game last season, which was manageable when the schedule topped out at 40 matches. That workload is set to increase considerably in 2026–27 and, with Patrick Dorgu primarily considered a winger, additional support is necessary. Ideally, Newcastle United's Lewis Hall might have been the answer, but Magpies boss Matthias Jaissle stated on Sunday that there is "no chance" of him leaving.

United have also been increasingly connected with Barcelona's Alejandro Balde, who has been told bluntly by manager Hansi Flick that he is "not here at 100%."

Darlow's signing has resolved the goalkeeping situation, while the reintegration of Marcus Rashford means a left winger is no longer a pressing need. Rashford can also fill in as a centre-forward when required, so his continued presence alongside Joshua Zirkzee pushes the search for a backup striker to the bottom of the priority list.
