How Mikel Arteta's Shocking Recruitment Tactic Sealed Riccardo Calafiori's Arsenal Move

It wasn't the extensive data analysis or incredibly detailed knowledge of his Bologna performances that persuaded Riccardo Calafiori to choose Arsenal over numerous competing clubs pursuing him 18 months ago. Instead, Mikel Arteta gained the advantage by showing a photograph of Calafiori's family.

This wasn't a threatening situation but rather another example of Arteta's unconventional method in his emotionally complex position as Arsenal's leader.

"The initial contact with Arsenal happened just before the European Championships," Calafiori remembers in an exclusive conversation with Sports Illustrated, reflecting on summer 2024. During that period, the adaptable center-back was among the most sought-after defensive talents available, earning his place in Luciano Spalletti's Italy team after playing a creative role as Bologna achieved their best league position in fifty years.

"Throughout that season, I deliberately avoided listening to transfer speculation because I wanted to stay concentrated on my club and national team duties," Calafiori explains.

"Initially, he [Arteta] simply wanted to meet and explain how the project would develop with my involvement. He presented numerous details, extensive data, and statistics, and they even displayed pictures of my family." Rather than the analytical figures, it was Arteta's personal approach that stayed with Calafiori eighteen months later.

"That moment is something I'll never forget. Being an Italian child, I've always been extremely close to my mother, father, and sister. He asked what my family means to me and showed photographs of my sister, mother, and father."

Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United were all reportedly interested in the graceful defender, but none displayed the interpersonal skills that Arteta exhibited during their initial meeting and throughout the following 18 months.

A subtle smile appears on Calafiori's face as he considers Arteta's management style. "I can characterize his mindset as treating every session the same, whether it's the opening day of preseason or one day before a Champions League final," the Italian smiles. "He genuinely wants you to practice as though you're in an actual match."

Beyond the constant expectations, that caring quality which drew Calafiori to Arsenal remains equally strong. "I observe how deeply he cares about my development, his focus, and his desire for my improvement," the left-back says about Arteta.

"Every aspect, every day. I recall this from preseason's start. We were already practicing new systems and fresh tactics. He was already planning for the season's beginning."

Calafiori's journey has been shaped by three pivotal transfer choices. The disappointment of learning from his childhood club Roma that he had no future in the eternal city was still raw when the 20-year-old made the unusual decision to join Swiss club Basel. Following an outstanding season outside Europe's top leagues, which still saw him reach the Conference League semifinals, he wagered on Thiago Motta's Bologna succeeding.

That risk proved successful as I Rossoblù surprisingly secured Champions League qualification, transforming Calafiori from a hidden talent to a regular national team player. During that summer's European Championships, Spalletti openly likened him to two modern Italian defensive legends: Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci. The latter offered his own assessment: Calafiori might surpass them both. "Riccardo is unique among defenders," Bonucci praised.

With unlimited possibilities and abundant interest, Calafiori faced another challenging decision. He believes he chose correctly.

"I recognized it was the perfect choice for me," he states. "The entire atmosphere, all staff members, they simply want your significant improvement. My goal was joining the world's premier league, the most competitive competition globally. I believe it was the correct decision for my development as both a player and person.

"Now I can confidently say I was absolutely right."

Calafiori's transfer to Arsenal has been equally advantageous for both the club and the player.

While his technical abilities with the ball are justifiably praised, it's appropriate that Calafiori's father originally gave his son the nickname "Ruspa"—Bulldozer—considering his vital role as Arsenal's offensive disruptor.

"Richy has been essential, particularly in our attacking approach," Arteta praised this week after welcoming Calafiori back from a month-long injury absence. "He possesses distinctive abilities to occupy positions and generate opportunities that differ from our other fullbacks' strengths."

During Calafiori's injury period, Arsenal managed only goalless draws against Liverpool and Nottingham Forest before suffering a disappointing and creatively limited 3–2 defeat at home to Manchester United. Piero Hincapié, a natural center-back who appears uncomfortable in attacking areas, and right-footed Jurriën Timber covered for Calafiori during these matches, but neither approached his dynamic style.

Calafiori isn't simply an inverted fullback but rather a wandering threat. In a team operating under Arteta's tactical restrictions, this roaming 6'2" player with a top-knot enjoys freedom to move across the entire field. Following the season's first eight games, no Arsenal squad member exceeded the left-back's total of 16 shots. Until Calafiori's muscle injury during the Christmas period, he was still out-shooting star center-forward summer acquisition Viktor Gyökeres.

Beyond the impressive statistics, Calafiori adds excitement and unpredictability to an Arsenal team that can sometimes be challenging for neutral observers. This quality is vital. As he emphasizes, Calafiori's entire north London career has always been fundamentally driven by pure emotion.
