Real Madrid are edging closer to their first signings of what promises to be a transformative summer.
Reports emerged on Tuesday that the club had struck agreements for both Ibrahima Konaté and Denzel Dumfries.
Konaté has reportedly reached a "verbal agreement" with Madrid following his departure from Liverpool at the end of his contract. Meanwhile, Los Blancos are prepared to trigger the €20 million ($23 million) release clause for 30-year-old Dumfries. Both moves, however, hinge on Florentino Pérez securing re-election as club president on Sunday, June 7.
Dumfries is reportedly backed by José Mourinho—the frontrunner to be appointed Real Madrid head coach if Perez holds onto his position—and would bring added competition at right back following Dani Carvajal's departure.
The 34-year-old skipper's exit after 451 appearances leaves Trent Alexander-Arnold as the squad's only senior right back option.
Alexander-Arnold, like several of his new teammates, endured an inconsistent 2025–26 campaign at best, and the potential arrival of a player of Dumfries' quality raises questions about his standing in the side.
What Does Dumfries Bring to Real Madrid?

If his transfer is completed, Dumfries will arrive at Real Madrid as one of the most dangerous attacking full backs on the continent.
Now 30, he has spent five seasons at Inter Milan, collecting two Serie A titles and three Coppa Italia trophies, while also appearing in the 2022–23 and 2024–25 Champions League finals. The ex-PSV man is also expected to feature prominently for the Netherlands at the summer World Cup and has earned 71 caps for his country.
Although he has some experience in a flat back four, Dumfries is most comfortable operating as a right wing back for both club and country, with his greatest contributions coming in the attacking third.
Throughout his Inter Milan tenure, he has built a reputation as one of the finest attacking wing backs in the game, combining athleticism with a knack for scoring. Dumfries captured widespread attention last season during the two-legged Champions League semi-final victory over Barcelona, netting twice in the first leg—including a stunning scissor kick—and contributing two assists in the second.
While he has drawn criticism for technical limitations and defensive lapses, his output in the final third has won over many skeptics, with La Gazzetta dello Sport famously likening Dumfries to Bitcoin.
"In the beginning nobody trusts it, but you had better invest in it," the outlet wrote of the wing back.
Is Trent Alexander-Arnold's Position Under Threat?

Dumfries represents a distinctly different profile to Trent Alexander-Arnold at Real Madrid.
The Dutchman lacks Alexander-Arnold's exceptional creative vision and is unlikely to be threading the kind of sweeping 50-yard passes the Englishman is known for. That said, he would offer greater forward momentum down the flank as an overlapping outlet with higher energy levels. He also gives Madrid the flexibility to shift into a back-three system with wing backs if required.
At 6' 2", Dumfries is also more dominant in aerial duels than Alexander-Arnold. Crucially, however, neither player is particularly noted for their defensive reliability.
At 30 years old and coming off an injury-disrupted campaign—during which he missed more than 20 matches for Inter Milan and made just 15 Serie A starts—Dumfries is expected to arrive as a backup to first-choice Alexander-Arnold.
Despite needing time to settle into his new environment in his debut season, the former Liverpool man grew into the role and offered flashes of his creative brilliance.
Zero goals and six assists may be considered a modest return for his first season, though there are extenuating circumstances, including injury setbacks. The arrival of someone like Dumfries should provide healthy competition without leaving Alexander-Arnold feeling displaced.
Alexander-Arnold vs. Dumfries in 2025–26 (All Competitions)
Player | Appearances | Goals | Assists | Tackles | Interceptions | Dribbles |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Alexander-Arnold | 35 | 0 | 6 | 39 | 24 | 26 |
Denzel Dumfries | 27 | 5 | 1 | 27 | 9 | 28 |
Do Real Madrid Still Need a More Defensive Right Back?

While Dumfries adds squad depth, his signing does not fully resolve Madrid's deeper defensive vulnerabilities, with Alexander-Arnold's positional awareness exposed in key 2025–26 fixtures—most notably against Bayern Munich and Barcelona.
With Carvajal, a genuine two-way defender, now gone, Madrid no longer have a reliable option to shore up the defensive flank. Whether the club pursue further reinforcements beyond Dumfries is yet to be determined.
Another intriguing element is the proposed deal for Konaté, who spent four seasons alongside Alexander-Arnold at Liverpool, predominantly playing as the right-sided center back.
The French international was frequently called upon to provide defensive cover for his former teammate and possesses the athleticism to effectively patrol multiple areas alongside a less defensively-oriented right back.
