How Wrexham Women's First Defeat Could Spark an Even Greater Rise

Wrexham Women's perfect start to the new Adran Premier campaign was brought to an end over the weekend as they fell to a dramatic 3–2 home defeat against The New Saints.

Wrexham clawed back from two goals behind to draw level in stoppage time, only for Fiona Barry to strike a stunning winner in the dying seconds and seal a remarkable victory on the road for the visitors.

The defeat ended Wrexham's unbeaten run to open the season, while TNS maintained their flawless record as they climbed to the summit of the table with five victories from their first five outings. Jenny Sugarman was keen to point out at the final whistle that the title race is far from settled after just five games, with club captain Jodie Bartle echoing that sentiment, describing the season as a "marathon, not a sprint."

Wrexham Face Fresh Challenge For Title

Wrexham players react after they lost 3-2 to TNS in the Adran Premier.

Wrexham remain the favorites to defend the league title they won for the first time back in March, though this time it appears TNS, rather than Cardiff City, will be their primary competition for the crown. For a top flight featuring just eight clubs, that can only serve as a positive sign for the growth of the domestic game, even if the result is a bitter pill for Wrexham to swallow right now.

"When the season kicked off this year, there was simply more expectation placed on Wrexham," former Wrexham defender and current pundit Mia Roberts told Sports Illustrated. "Especially given their Champions League involvement over the summer and the quality of players they brought in. Wrexham were overwhelmingly the favorites to win not just the league, but likely both cup competitions too."

Jenny Sugarman's squad have already been in competitive action for three months, ever since their historic European debut was ended by Latvian outfit Riga FC in the Women's Champions League qualifying second round. The club also invested heavily in their roster over the summer, welcoming a number of new arrivals.

One of those new faces, Natasha Thomas, believed she had earned a vital point against TNS with her seventh league goal of the campaign, while Wrexham also brought in former Manchester City midfielder Millie Davies to bolster their ranks last month.

Wrexham are hopeful those additions will help them progress further in Europe next season, but that ambition hinges on retaining the Adran Premier title — something that is proving far more challenging than anticipated.

It's a marathon, not a sprint.

Roberts continued: "TNS have shown they're going to push us all the way, and that's exactly what we want to see. I think Cardiff have clearly fallen away, which is understandable following manager Iain Darbyshire's departure over the summer.

"Swansea as well. I have to say I've been genuinely impressed with Swansea. They're at a new ground and building something really exciting under Yzzy Taylor. It would be wonderful for Wrexham to dominate this league, but at the same time, you want that competitive edge. The 7–0s and 8–1s week after week — who do they really benefit?

"Of course, it's great when you're winning by those kinds of margins, and we have already done that a few times this season. But there's a bigger picture when it comes to Welsh women's football. I think this is going to be a genuine title race."

Wrexham Women were cheered on by an impressive crowd of around 700 supporters at The Rock over the weekend, with the Red Dragons being the first women's side in the Welsh leagues to fully own their own stadium.

The groundwork is firmly in place for another remarkable season, and Roberts believes the experience of having already lifted the title could prove decisive when the campaign reaches its climax.

She added: "The squad Jenny has available to her is arguably the strongest we've ever seen in Welsh domestic football. You look at it and there's the likes of Katie Barker and what she's already achieved, Natasha Thomas arriving as Ipswich's top scorer, Lydia Sallaway — these players have outstanding records, both in a Wrexham shirt and before they arrived.

"With that experience of winning the double last year, if TNS are the ones to push them and it does turn into a two-horse race, I think that history works massively in Wrexham's favor because they've been through it before. TNS haven't had that recent experience in the league. So perhaps that's where the difference lies.

"I hope it's a thrilling race. I hope it goes right down to the final day, and I hope it ends in Wrexham's favor."
