Hull vs. Man Utd: Everything You Need to Know Before the Big Clash

Hull vs. Man Utd: Everything You Need to Know Before the Big Clash

Manchester United open their 2026–27 Premier League season with an away trip to newly promoted Hull City on Saturday.

The Red Devils closed out last season on a positive note after Michael Carrick engineered a stunning turnaround that ended with Champions League qualification. Spirits are high and a wave of optimism has returned to the terraces at Old Trafford.

United's underwhelming preseason has taken some of the shine off, with just two victories from six friendlies. Framed by losses to Wrexham and Ruben Amorim's AC Milan, their warmup fixtures included hard-earned draws against Leeds United and Paris Saint-Germain, along with victories over Rosenborg and Atlético Madrid.

The trip to the MKM Stadium will be the first encounter between these sides in nine years, with the 2016–17 campaign being the last time Hull competed in the top flight. Following years of Championship struggles and even a stint in League One, they have bounced back under the impressive guidance of Sergej Jakirović.

Last season's Championship playoff champions face a tricky opening fixture and will need United to show some early-season rustiness to cause an upset. With notable summer spending, they'll be hoping some new arrivals can make an immediate impression.

Red Devils Make Winning Start

Andrey Santos, Diogo Dalot

Heading to a newly promoted club on the opening weekend is rarely a straightforward task. The atmosphere at the MKM Stadium will be electric, and that energy could carry Hull's players through difficult moments in the match. United must guard against any sense of complacency.

That said, Carrick's squad should still secure a winning start to his full-time tenure without needing to push themselves to the limit.

The arrivals of midfielders Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos have addressed one of United's weaker areas from the previous campaign, and the duo will provide support to a talented front four featuring last season's Premier League Player of the Year Bruno Fernandes. The squad is brimming with quality, even if questions linger over the backline.

Hull will show plenty of heart and fight until the final whistle, but their relative lack of quality may ultimately prove their undoing.

Prediction: Hull 1–3 Man Utd

Hull Predicted Lineup vs. Man Utd

Hull predicted lineup

Hull have bolstered their squad considerably over the summer, which will prove useful given their current injury concerns.

While Jakirović has suggested new midfielder Hidemasa Morita could feature following his return from injury, Hull will be missing summer signings Óscar Zambrano, Jack Butland and Joe Gelhardt.

Additionally, Charlie Hughes, Paddy McNair, Matty Jacob, Darko Gyabi and Eliot Matazo are all sidelined, though Cody Drameh returns to availability after recovering from a hamstring problem.

Several new signings are expected to make their competitive debuts, among them goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis, center back Nobel Mendy and midfielder Jens Hjertø-Dahl.

Hull predicted lineup vs. Man Utd (4-2-3-1): Tzolakis; Coyle, Ajayi, Mendy, Giles; Slater, Crooks; Belloumi, Hjertø-Dahl, Stroud; McBurnie.

Carrick will again be without Matthijs de Ligt for now, with the center back sidelined since last November but gradually working his way back. Manuel Ugarte also joined the injury list over the summer after suffering an ACL tear.

Benjamin Šeško sat out preseason through injury but could earn a place in United's squad for the Hull fixture. Mason Mount is a concern, however, after picking up another setback during the PSG friendly.

Bryan Mbeumo is expected to lead the attack for now, with Tielemans and Santos set to form the midfield double pivot. Ayden Heaven may be preferred over Lisandro Martínez at center back, with the Argentine still building up his fitness following an extended post-World Cup rest complicated by a thigh problem.

Third-choice goalkeeper Tom Heaton is ruled out with a hamstring issue, meaning summer recruit Karl Darlow is in line for a bench role after overcoming a recent injury of his own.

Man Utd predicted lineup vs. Hull (4-2-3-1): Lammens; Dalot, Maguire, Heaven, Shaw; Santos, Tielemans; Amad, Fernandes, Cunha; Mbeumo.
