Ibrahima Konate Poised to Slam the Door Shut on His Liverpool Career

Contract talks between Liverpool and Ibrahima Konaté have broken down after failing to reach any "common ground," according to multiple reports.

With no extension on the horizon, the French center back is poised to become a free agent when his current deal runs out on June 30, following the same route taken by Trent Alexander-Arnold the previous summer.

As recently as April, Konaté told reporters there was a "big chance" he would stay at Liverpool. "This is what I've always wanted," he said at the time.

However, it has since emerged that Konaté will in fact depart Anfield this summer, as talkSPORT first reported. Sky Sports News quickly backed that claim, disclosing that despite lengthy negotiations between the player and the club, they "could not find common ground" on the terms of a new deal.

The weeks following Konaté's public statement passed without any official word from the club. It was subsequently reported that both parties had reached a "stalemate." It now appears that Konaté was serious about his demands all along.

What Has Ibrahima Konaté Asked for?

Konaté joined Liverpool in 2021 as a 22-year-old who had built an impressive reputation at RB Leipzig but had yet to earn his first senior international cap. The contract he signed at the time would have reflected that standing and is believed to be worth around $201,000 (£150,000) per week.

Earlier this season, it was reported that Konaté was seeking a new salary "in line" with the club's highest earners—though there were no indications he was expecting figures comparable to the likes of Virgil van Dijk or Mohamed Salah, two of the best-paid players in the world, let alone just at Liverpool.

"I didn't even ask for something from the club," Konaté has maintained. "They made me an offer, and I replied to them with something, that is it." That response amounted to a counter-offer, and it appears Liverpool were unwilling to meet those terms.

Money Not the Only Factor for Konaté

The prolonged nature of these negotiations has undoubtedly been shaped by Liverpool's difficult season. Champions League qualification, along with the financial rewards it brings, was not secured until the final matchday, meaning the club couldn't commit to figures they weren't certain they'd have available.

In sharp contrast to Liverpool's uncertainty, a number of rival clubs have shown increasingly "concrete" interest in acquiring the potential free agent, according to L'Équipe.

Real Madrid's pursuit of Konaté was believed to have cooled back in November, but the situation in the Spanish capital has shifted considerably since then. Xabi Alonso, formerly at the Bernabéu, has been linked with interest in Konaté following his move to Chelsea, while Bayern Munich are also said to be keen on a player with considerable Bundesliga experience.

For Konaté, the road ahead is filled with numerous options. Only one destination appears to be firmly off the table: staying at Liverpool.
