That narrative shifted, however, a few months into the 2025–26 season, when reports indicated that Konaté's poor form had made Madrid reluctant to follow through on a move, even with a free transfer on the table.
Liverpool, meanwhile, are keen to keep Konaté and have been in discussions with him for several months. Out of the blue, the French defender told reporters in April that he was "close" to agreeing an extension and that there was a "big chance" he would stay at Anfield.
Since then, nothing.
Five weeks on, credible reports described the negotiations between Liverpool and Konaté as having reached "a stalemate," with the situation said to be not "particularly positive."
With the season now concluded, Liverpool's main focus will be on reaching some kind of resolution with Konaté — either to put the uncertainty to rest or to allow themselves sufficient time to identify a replacement.

Will Ibrahima Konaté Sign a New Liverpool Contract?
Despite an inconsistent season, Konaté has no shortage of clubs interested in securing his services. At 27 years old, he is an established defender in the peak years of his career and could potentially be acquired on a free transfer.
Those interested clubs are free to hold talks with Konaté and can likely offer him better financial packages precisely because they would not be paying a transfer fee. If wages are the central issue, Liverpool face a genuine uphill battle.
Clues about how this situation will resolve have been scarce, but new recruit Jérémy Jacquet may have inadvertently offered one. The 20-year-old Frenchman is set to join from Rennes this summer and recently spoke to Ouest France about any concerns he might have regarding settling into a new environment.
"There's also Ibou Konaté, who can help me settle in," Jacquet said. "Training with players like that — it doesn't get any better than that."
There is naturally no way to confirm whether Jacquet has any inside knowledge of Konaté's plans, but the young defender does appear confident that he will be playing alongside his compatriot next season.
For now, Liverpool supporters are left in an anxious holding pattern, having grown increasingly frustrated with drawn-out contract negotiations. Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk both caused uncertainty last year, before Trent Alexander-Arnold ultimately chose to leave and sign for Real Madrid. Where Konaté will end up remains to be seen.
