Ilkay Gundogan Chases Childhood Dream, Departing Man City After Just One Season

Ilkay Gündogan said his emotional goodbyes to Manchester City on Tuesday night, merely twelve months after his return to the Etihad Stadium, as he completed his dream transfer to Turkish powerhouse Galatasaray.
The German midfielder was Pep Guardiola's inaugural acquisition as Manchester City's head coach in 2016, but departed for Barcelona following his role as captain in securing the club's maiden Champions League triumph. Gündogan spent only one season in Spain before terminating his contract and forfeiting substantial wages to return to the Etihad.
The 34-year-old featured in 54 matches across all tournaments during what proved to be Guardiola's most challenging season at City. An automatic contract extension clause was activated after Gündogan reached a specific appearance threshold, yet all sides mutually agreed to separate this summer.
For City, this decision eliminated a significant salary burden and reduced a squad that Guardiola has consistently labeled as oversized. For Gündogan, the move held deeper significance.
"I'm reunited with my childhood love," Gündogan posted on social media following his arrival in Istanbul to an enthusiastic welcome. "Happiness is being at Galatasaray."
The German-born Gündogan takes pride in his Turkish heritage and would journey to Turkey annually during summers to visit his grandparents. In a heartfelt goodbye message to City supporters, the experienced midfielder revealed he was joining his "childhood favourite club, in a country that means so much to me."
Nevertheless, football considerations also influenced his decision. "Dear Cityzens, I want to be honest with you... the reason why I'm leaving is very simple: I still want to play football as often as possible, because that's what I love the most," Gündogan shared on X. "I'll turn 35 soon, but I still feel very fit and I truly believe I can continue to perform at a high level for a Champions League team."
"Man City want a new beginning after an incredible era—something I can fully understand and respect," he continued. "I will never, ever forget what this great club has done for me over so many years.
"Most of my time here was absolutely fantastic and incredibly successful. The club and the city of Manchester will always hold a very special place in my heart."
