Real Madrid were rocked this week by shocking reports that Federico Valverde had been taken to hospital following a physical altercation with fellow midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni during a training session.
In an already turbulent season plagued by off-pitch controversies, the explosive story represented a new low for the club, who are facing back-to-back campaigns without silverware.
Reports emerged on Thursday that the two players clashed in the dressing room at Valdebebas, with Valverde sustaining a head injury after striking a table during the confrontation.
Real Madrid confirmed they have launched disciplinary proceedings against both players, and disclosed that Valverde had sustained a head injury as a result of the incident.
Certain reports suggest the Uruguayan was briefly rendered unconscious and needed stitches to treat the wound.
Valverde Denies Punches Were Thrown

His condition is not considered serious, however, and Valverde took to Instagram to publish a detailed personal statement, seeking to calm the storm that had erupted across social media.
Part of his post reads: "During the argument, I accidentally hit a table, causing a small cut on my forehead that required me to go on a protocol visit to the hospital. At no point did my teammate hit me, and I didn't hit him either, although I understand that for you, it's easier to believe that we traded punches or that it was intentional, but that didn't happen.
"I'm sorry. I'm sorry from the bottom of my heart because the situation hurts me, the moment we're going through pains me. Real Madrid are one of the most important things in my life, and I can't be indifferent. What happened is the accumulation of many things that result in a senseless fight that damages my image."
What Caused the Fight Between Valverde and Tchouaméni?

In his statement, Valverde referred to the incident as "an accumulation of things that ended in a senseless fight."
Thursday's clash was actually the second consecutive day the two midfielders had come to blows at the training facility, following reports on Wednesday that they had needed to be pulled apart during another heated practice session.
The incidents represent the flashpoint of tensions between the two players that have been building for several months.
According to Onda Cero, Valverde made "about three tackles" on Tchouaméni during the session, apparently with the intention to "cause harm." Meanwhile, MARCA reports that the Uruguayan refused to greet his teammate upon arriving on Thursday, still simmering from the previous day's altercation.
Meanwhile, El Pais claims Valverde's discontent dates back to Madrid's Champions League group stage trip to face Kairat in Kazakhstan last September.
Madrid triumphed 5–0 in that fixture, with Valverde left on the bench as an unused substitute — reportedly as a consequence of publicly complaining to the media the day before that he "wasn't born to play at right back." It is alleged that the vice-captain undermined then-manager Xabi Alonso by refusing to warm up, instead standing with his arms folded in front of the crowd.
Never considered a supporter of Alonso, Valverde was widely regarded as one of the key figures pushing for the manager's departure in January. Yet he has continued to feel sidelined in the second half of a disappointing campaign, with the team's system built around Kylian Mbappé. El Pais's report highlights that Valverde's finest form this season came during Mbappé's injury absence — netting six goals in five matches, including a hat-trick against Manchester City.
The Valverde-Tchouaméni dispute is far from the only dressing room flashpoint at Madrid, with reports of confrontations involving Mbappé, Dani Carvajal, Antonio Rüdiger and Álvaro Carreras also emerging in recent weeks.
There are even indications that a number of players have broken off communication with manager Álvaro Arbeloa, with the squad deeply divided in their frustration over a deeply disappointing season.
What Action Will Real Madrid Take?

Real Madrid have initiated disciplinary proceedings against both players, who face potential financial penalties and playing bans.
A MARCA report indicates the incident is classified as "serious misconduct," meaning Valverde and Tchouaméni could face a deduction of up to 25% of one month's wages along with an internal suspension from upcoming fixtures. Should it be classified as "very serious," however, the pair could face a full suspension from employment and salary for as long as 30 days.
Questions have also been raised about whether Valverde could be stripped of his vice-captaincy role.
The sanctions handed down will be significant in establishing how Madrid intends to handle internal unrest during a period of intense friction that has threatened to spiral into full-scale dressing room warfare.
Neither player is expected to travel with the squad for El Clásico this Sunday.
According to Onda Cero, however, Madrid have no intention of offloading either player when the transfer window reopens this summer.
