Inter Miami head coach Guillermo Hoyos confirmed that striker Germán Berterame is awake and on the mend following a frightening head collision during Saturday night's match.
Berterame clashed in the air with CF Montréal defender Efraín Morales in the 70th minute of the Herons' 1–0 victory at Stade Saputo. The 27-year-old sustained a blow to the back of his head before crashing heavily to the ground, appearing to lose consciousness on impact.
Players from both sides immediately rushed to summon medical staff, and Berterame was subsequently transported to hospital by ambulance. The alarming incident cast a shadow over the final minutes of the game as fans worldwide anxiously awaited news on the Mexican international.
"He's recovering right now, he's fine, conscious," Hoyos stated at his postgame press conference. "His family has been informed of everything. They're calm. The most important thing is that he's O.K., and right now he is O.K.
"We were alarmed at first because the blow was very strong. On the play, it's obvious there was an elbow, which is why a penalty was awarded, he fell like dead weight.
"I think he might have already been unconscious given the severity of the impact. He took that elbow and hit the ground hard. It was a moment of great desperation and deep sadness, because it went beyond football, and all that. It's about human life, that's what matters most. So, we just hope everything turns out well."

Inter Miami were awarded a penalty for Morales's challenge, and Luis Suárez stepped up to convert from the spot, securing all three points for his team. The Uruguayan celebrated with his teammates before holding up Berterame's jersey in tribute to the stricken forward.
Suárez has now netted six goals across his last three outings for the Herons, marking an impressive return to form after a difficult 2025 campaign that saw him largely confined to the bench. The veteran forward scored 17 times in 50 appearances last season, yet has already bagged eight goals in just 14 games in 2026.
Hoyos needs the 39-year-old to maintain his prolific form now more than ever. With Berterame sidelined and Lionel Messi taking a well-earned break following the 2026 World Cup, Suárez has become the focal point of Inter Miami's attacking play.
The former Barcelona star should have every opportunity to add to his tally against Columbus Crew in their next fixture, given that the 11th-place outfit has managed just two clean sheets in their last 14 league outings.
Berterame's Injury Comes at a Cruel Time
Berterame endured significant scrutiny during his early spell at Inter Miami. The striker arrived in south Florida carrying enormous expectations after being signed as a Designated Player for the reigning MLS Cup champions.
However, Berterame struggled to settle into a new league with an unfamiliar squad. The Monterrey standout failed to register a single goal contribution across his first seven appearances, drawing widespread criticism from supporters and pundits alike.
Following the March international break, Berterame finally hit his stride. He contributed a goal or assist in each of his next five matches, before netting four goals in three consecutive appearances just prior to the league's hiatus for the 2026 World Cup.

The striker resumed his strong form upon returning to action, providing an assist in the team's 3–2 victory over the Chicago Fire. Heading into Saturday's clash with Montréal, Berterame had accumulated seven goals and four assists for the season.
