The defending MLS Cup champions have had an inconsistent start to the campaign, recording three wins from their opening six MLS fixtures, while also suffering a painful early exit from the Concacaf Champions Cup. Meanwhile, Red Bull are navigating the steep learning curve that comes with building around young talent.

Currently occupying fourth place in the Eastern Conference, Miami are eager to secure a win and build attacking momentum beyond Lionel Messi's individual brilliance, while New York sit on 10 points — just one behind Miami — and look to maintain their positive run following a 4–2 victory over FC Cincinnati.

Still searching for his ideal starting eleven, Miami boss Javier Mascherano may make more notable changes against Red Bull, most notably handing Luis Suárez a starting berth at the top of the 4-2-3-1. 

Suárez, 39, has netted once in 116 minutes this season — a superior conversion rate compared to Germán Berterame, who has gone scoreless across nine appearances in all competitions, as well as Tadeo Allende and Mateo Silvetti, both of whom have struggled when deployed as the central striker. 

While Suárez's movement is a concern at this stage of his career, his presence has also helped Lionel Messi elevate his output this season, making the central attacking midfield position a greater threat for Miami. Meanwhile, the winger combination has shown promise — with Telasco Segovia and Mateo Silvetti selected for this weekend's fixture. 

In the engine room, Yannick Bright returns to the side alongside Rodrigo De Paul, while the defensive line features the now-established quartet of Noah Allen, Micael, Maxi Falcón and Ian Fray, with Canadian international goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair guarding the net. 

These tweaks could well prove fruitful. However, should Suárez find the net again, it will raise questions — does that make him a reliable enough option to displace Berterame, or will the club still look to bring in another striker this summer?

On the injury front, Sergio Reguilón remains sidelined with a leg muscle problem.

The standout performer this season has been 18-year-old striker Julian Hall, who has bagged five goals in six matches while building a strong partnership with fellow teenager Adri Mehmeti. Both are expected to start this weekend, with veteran Emil Forsberg pulling the strings in central midfield and pushing forward when New York are in possession. 

While the youthful roster brings an uninhibited attacking energy, inconsistency has been their Achilles heel on certain matchdays, with the younger players yet to fully grasp the discipline required over a long professional season. 

Nevertheless, Hall and Mehmeti will be central to New York's attacking threat this weekend, while the defensive unit of Jahkeele Marshall-Rutty, Dylan Nealis, Robert Voloder and Matthew Dos Santos continues to build cohesion against elite opposition. In goal, former USMNT stopper Ethan Horvath is expected to start as he continues to settle into MLS life after the bulk of his career in Europe.
