Inter Miami's 2026 Dream Team: Star Signings Ignite Championship Ambitions
Just under three months following their historic first MLS Cup victory, Inter Miami prepares to kick off the new MLS regular season with a dramatically transformed perspective after a pivotal offseason period.
The departures of football icons Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, who hung up their boots after the championship, mark a significant change. Meanwhile, 2025 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year Dayne St. Clair, imposing forward Germán Berterame, and additional talent have joined the squad for 2026.
The Herons face the prospect of competing in more than 50 matches for the consecutive second season, making squad depth an even more critical consideration than in 2025. However, following an ambitious offseason, they possess the necessary resources to pursue up to four potential trophies in 2026 under head coach Javier Mascherano.
But how might everything fall into place?
New Signings Transform Inter Miami's Prospects
New Signings Transform Inter Miami's Prospects
During the previous campaign, Inter Miami predominantly utilized either a 4-3-3 or 4-4-2 formation, occasionally incorporating a 4-2-3-1 system. The key limitation, though, was the absence of a genuine prolific attacking focal point, often positioning Lionel Messi as a withdrawn secondary striker, working alongside an attacking midfielder in an elevated position.
The organization tackled these issues this season, investing a franchise-record $15 million to secure Berterame from Monterrey, establishing the foundation for a more structured offensive approach in 2026. Simultaneously, his arrival enables Messi to concentrate on playmaking rather than scoring, thus enhancing the threat posed by wide players, including Tadeo Allende and others.
Defensively, St. Clair immediately claims the number one position, and unlike 2025, there will be no goalkeeper competition throughout the campaign. Additionally, former Brazilian Serie A defender Micael joins the ranks, expected to partner with Maxi Falcón at the center of the defensive line.
Given these substantial offseason acquisitions, here's how Inter Miami might align when operating at peak performance and with full fitness in 2026.
Inter Miami Projected Starting XI for 2026 (4-2-3-1)
Inter Miami Projected Starting XI for 2026 (4-2-3-1)

GK: Dayne St. Clair—Anticipated to serve as Canada's primary goalkeeper for the 2026 World Cup, St. Clair possesses exceptional shot-stopping capabilities and was instrumental for Minnesota United in initiating offensive plays from the defensive third.
RB: Ian Fray—Now an established Jamaica international, Fray aims to stay healthy throughout the campaign and maximize his overlapping runs supporting Tadeo Allende on the right flank. Should he struggle, Facundo Mura stands ready to step in.
CB: Maxi Falcón—Among the few defensive holdovers, Falcón's aggressive style and leadership qualities proved essential for Inter Miami during the latter portion of the 2025 season.
CB: Micael—Following a notable stint with Houston Dynamo in 2024, Micael rejoins MLS with valuable experience gained from competing in Brazil's premier division during 2025.
LB: Sergio Regulión—A veteran of Premier League and La Liga competition, Regulión arrives at Inter Miami seeking to provide a more dynamic presence than Jordi Alba on the left side of the defense. Nevertheless, he sustained a preseason injury and may be unavailable for the opening competitive fixtures.
DM: Yannick Bright—With Busquets no longer in the squad, Mascherano will rely more heavily on former MLS SuperDraft selection Yannick Bright, who at 24 has accumulated 68 appearances and recently committed to a contract extending through 2027–28, with a 2028–29 option.
DM: Rodrigo De Paul—Beginning his inaugural complete MLS season, De Paul seeks to establish himself more firmly, likely operating in a more consistent central position, after spending parts of the 2025 campaign as a right-sided midfielder.
RM: Tadeo Allende—Now a permanent Inter Miami player following the club's agreement with La Liga's Celta Vigo, Allende aims to utilize his understanding of Messi's play and his pace to extend the form that produced a record nine MLS Cup playoff goals into regular season action.
AM: Lionel Messi—Returning to a classic No. 10 position in this configuration, Messi will be positioned to exploit midfield spaces while attempting to replicate his 29 goals and 19 assists across 28 matches from the 2025 campaign.
LM: Mateo Silvetti—At 20 years of age and entering his second season playing alongside Messi, Mateo Silvetti could earn consideration for the Argentine World Cup roster should the promising youngster deliver a strong early-season performance.
ST: Germán Berterame—Germán Berterame wasted little time finding the net during preseason, scoring in just his second outing against Ecuador's Barcelona SC. With 68 goals across 153 matches for Monterrey, Miami's newest Designated Player immediately becomes a leading candidate for the MLS Golden Boot.
