Inter Superstar Shuts Down Chelsea's Bargain Hunt with Polite Rejection

Chelsea allegedly pursued Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni during the summer transfer window, though they fell well short of meeting the Italian club's substantial asking price.

Bastoni has developed into one of the globe's most coveted central defenders, initially establishing himself in Inter's senior squad under Antonio Conte's guidance. His exceptional ability was apparent during his youth career, and he has consistently been a key figure in the Nerazzurri's defensive line.

The Inter standout blends traditional Italian grinta with the qualities of an ideal contemporary centre-back, with Bastoni thriving in the left-sided role within a three-defender system. He has made more than 250 appearances for the Nerazzurri, securing seven significant trophies and contributing to their participation in two Champions League finals.

He has also received Serie A's Best Defender award on two occasions and has been included in the league's Team of the Year three times.

Simply put, it's clear why the 26-year-old has attracted considerable interest, though Inter have consistently been reluctant to part with such a valuable player. His reputation reached new heights entering the summer following another outstanding campaign, particularly his impressive European performances, which has drawn additional Premier League attention—specifically from Chelsea.

In a recent article, Gazzetta dello Sport examined Inter's requirement to refresh their defensive unit under new coach Cristian Chivu, indicating Benjamin Pavard as the most probable departure. Nevertheless, they also revealed that Inter turned down a €50 million (£43 million, $58 million) proposal from the Blues for Bastoni earlier this summer, an offer that was "courteously rejected".

Chelsea have strengthened their defensive options by acquiring Jorrel Hato from Ajax, though Enzo Maresca has recently indicated that the club requires another addition following Levi Colwill's ACL injury. The Blues continue their significant spending in attacking areas, with potential deals for Alejandro Garnacho and Xavi Simons being pursued, making it improbable they'll return for Bastoni, despite him fitting Maresca's requirements to replace Colwill.

Previous summer reports indicated that Inter were seeking up to €100 million (£86.4 million, $116.6 million) for the Italian national team player amid Saudi Arabian interest.
