Andoni Iraola played down the seriousness of Dominik Szoboszlai's latest injury concern, though cautioned that Jeremie Frimpong faces a spell on the sidelines extending beyond the November international break.
Despite the challenging task of visiting Brentford, Iraola was far from upbeat in his post-match press conference. The triumphant Liverpool manager described it as a "very expensive" win, pointing to two players who had been forced off with muscular problems.
Szoboszlai was the most prominent concern, going down after 30 minutes with a recurrence of the thigh problem that had already caused him to miss Liverpool's previous two matches. Iraola had initially feared his key midfielder would be out "for some time," but his subsequent midweek update carried a more positive tone.
While a return for Tuesday's Champions League encounter with Villarreal was never on the cards, the Basque tactician reassured supporters that their No. 8 had not suffered any additional damage. "It's not a new injury, it's in the same place as last week, he has not worsened the injury, but we have to be a bit more patient until he recovers fully," Iraola stated.
"It is not like we now have to wait a lot of time to come back."
Frimpong's road to recovery, however, will be a lengthier one. The full-back managed just six minutes against Brentford, limping off shortly after his second-half introduction having initially been given a rest following the midweek trip to Austria. "Jeremie has a new muscle injury and we will have to wait until he recovers," Iraola noted. "It's going to be difficult I think before the international break."
'Not the One You Are Thinking'—Iraola Teases Liverpool Starting XI vs. Villarreal

Injury concerns aside, Iraola has acknowledged that he will need to utilise the full depth of his squad across Liverpool's demanding schedule of fixtures in the weeks ahead. The manager successfully navigated a convincing win over LASK with heavy rotation and has hinted at a similarly reshuffled lineup for the home clash with Villarreal.
"I am thinking of putting the best starting XI that I can against Villarreal," he told reporters. "But maybe it is not the one that you are thinking, because some players are not fresh enough.
"Probably it is better if someone is more fresh to start but I am analyzing the game, how can I put a good starting XI and think in the second half, how can we affect [the game] with the changes?"
The Liverpool Players Most at Risk of Injury
Player | Minutes | Fatigue Index |
|---|---|---|
Alisson | 842 | 74 |
Florian Wirtz | 979 | 69 |
Jérémy Jacquet | 1,006 | 66 |
Ronald Araújo | 834 | 62 |
Alexander Isak | 698 | 58 |
Data via Simon Brundish. The Fatigue Index is on a scale of 0–100, anything above 65 is in the 'red zone.'
Drawing on nine different statistical metrics rooted in the historical patterns that have preceded past injuries, alongside each player's individual track record, Simon Brundish has developed a 'Fatigue Index' that provides a broad indication of which players are most vulnerable to breaking down.
Liverpool's injury-prone goalkeeper Alisson may be given a breather in favour of Giorgi Mamardashvili during the midweek fixture to guard against another hamstring setback, while the relentless Florian Wirtz appears at risk of overexertion. Setting aside questions over his chance creation, his running output is beyond dispute: Wirtz has covered six miles more than any other player at the club.
The German playmaker once again topped the distance charts against Brentford, in what proved to be an exhausting contest for everyone involved. "I think it was the most demanding game in terms of the running stats that we have played, because Brentford demand this," Iraola admitted. "It is important that every one that starts tomorrow feels ready to go and 100%."
