Iraola Stuns With Winning Start: Three Bold Lessons From His Liverpool Managerial Debut

Liverpool dominated and beat Sunderland 4–2 to kick off the Andoni Iraola era with a commanding win in their preseason opener on Saturday.

Expectations for what the Spanish manager can bring to Liverpool's dugout are enormous, and it took just 13 minutes for Kieran Morrison to net the first goal of the new era, capping off a move that perfectly illustrated what the Reds will look like under the former Bournemouth manager. Sunderland hit back through a stunning strike from Enzo Le Fée that leveled things at one apiece heading into halftime.

The Reds were then stunned shortly after the restart when Jeremie Frimpong—who struggled throughout—gave the ball away near his own box, allowing Sunderland to take the lead through Timur Tuterov. It took fewer than 10 minutes for Liverpool to draw level as Dominik Szoboszlai picked up right where he left off last campaign, unleashing a thunderbolt from outside the area past Melker Ellborg.

Iraola's signature vertical play, suffocating high-press, and relentless counter-pressing reminiscent of Jürgen Klopp's Liverpool sides were on show from the very start.

The Reds opened the scoring 13 minutes in with a move that screamed "Iraola ball." It took only four passes for the ball to travel from James McConnell, who collected it deep from the goalkeeper, to Kieran Morrison, who finished the opener with a composed strike into the far corner after cutting in from the right flank.

An equally incisive vertical combination involving three passes and four total touches saw the ball move from midfield to Koumas, who coolly slotted home Liverpool's fourth.

Liverpool advanced the ball from deep into the final third in just three or four passes. Once positioned high up the field, the Reds had numbers in the attacking third, typically leaving only two defenders and a holding midfielder back to guard against counter-attacks.

On the flip side, Iraola's team was also vulnerable to transitions when the press was bypassed or possession was lost near the halfway line. One such instance led to a counter-attack that ended with Le Fée's equalizer. It was a stunning long-range effort, but the Sunderland midfielder had ample room to advance as both Liverpool fullbacks were caught high up the pitch and scrambling to recover.

Iraola's Reds are clearly still a work in progress, but it's already evident what kind of style the Spanish boss intends to implement.

It took fewer than 10 minutes into Liverpool's preseason opener for Joe Gomez's persistent injury woes to return, as he went down with an apparent muscular problem that forced his early withdrawal.

Availability is a crucial asset for players at elite clubs, and Gomez has consistently been unavailable. Muscular issues have restricted him to just over 2,000 minutes across the past two seasons at Liverpool. The 29-year-old has missed more than 30 matches through injury during that same period.

Gomez isn't expected to be a regular starter in Iraola's preferred backline, but his versatility and experience make him a valuable backup option, particularly with Ibrahima Konaté having departed the club. Konaté's replacement, Jérémy Jacquet, likely needs time to settle into English football after arriving from Rennes, and the Frenchman was absent against Sunderland after picking up a knock during the week.

Iraola would undoubtedly welcome a depth option like Gomez, but it has become increasingly clear that he cannot be counted on given his lengthy injury history. Liverpool will hope Gomez's latest setback is minor and that he was withdrawn as a precaution, but it was far from an encouraging sight to see him go down with yet another fitness concern just six minutes into preseason.

The injured Gomez was replaced by highly-rated 18-year-old signing Ifeanyi Ndukwe, who performed well but remains a raw prospect unlikely to feature heavily when the season gets underway.

Solid Impression From Young Reds

Liverpool were far from full strength on Saturday afternoon, with most of the squad's key players still on holiday following the World Cup or only just returning to fitness after an extended break. This created an opportunity for several young talents to make their mark, and a number of them delivered impressive performances.

Rio Ngumoha continued to provide a spark whenever he took on his opponent and will surely earn a bigger role this season. His fellow winger on the day, Morrison, was even more impressive against Sunderland, scoring a fine goal while misplacing just two passes throughout the entire match.

In midfield, McConnell was outstanding, aside from his costly turnover that led to Sunderland's second goal. The 21-year-old was everywhere on the pitch and served as the Reds' primary playmaker in the first half. However, 19-year-old Trey Nyoni was even more impressive after replacing Curtis Jones following the break. He recorded the most defensive contributions of any player on the field, and his three chances created were also the match's best tally. It wouldn't be a surprise to see him earn more minutes under Iraola after getting his first taste of senior football last term.

Calvin Ramsey came on for Frimpong following the Dutchman's costly error for Sunderland's second, and the 22-year-old Scotsman was significantly better. He confidently drove forward with the ball on several occasions from the moment he entered at the 68-minute mark, nearly teeing up an overlapping Milos Kerkez with a driven low cross. Ramsey ultimately got his reward, however, delivering a clever pass to pick out Chiesa and restore Liverpool's lead.

Finally, Koumas was lively throughout the second half, taking four shots to lead all players and creating two chances after coming on. His energetic determination to make an impact was rewarded with a goal that sealed the result.
