Is Barcelona Ready to Seal the Deal on Marcus Rashford's $35 Million Transfer?

Barcelona's campaign has come to a close, and with the Catalan club now fully turning their attention to planning for 2026–27, one of the most pressing matters they must resolve is a definitive call on Marcus Rashford's future.

Rashford arrived at Barcelona on a loan deal from Manchester United last summer, with a $35 million (€30 million, £26 million) purchase clause included in the agreement. After a season in which Rashford helped the Catalans claim La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup, the moment has arrived for the club to reach a verdict.

The England international has made it crystal clear that he wants to remain at Barcelona, and reports suggest a revised contract with a reduced salary would not pose a problem. Barcelona are keen to retain Rashford and have attempted to negotiate with Man Utd, but the Premier League club are refusing to lower their asking price. If Barça want Rashford, they will have to activate the purchase clause.

The buy option is reportedly set to expire while Rashford is on international duty with England at the World Cup, meaning the Catalans are quickly running out of time to reach a conclusion. After a full season of evidence, what is the right call for Barcelona?

Marcus Rashford's Barcelona Tenure

Barcelona were desperate to bring in a winger during last summer's transfer window. After their financial limitations led to missing out on Nico Williams for the second consecutive year and withdrawing from serious talks over Luis Díaz, the club turned to Rashford—who had waited for Barcelona—on a season-long loan.

Brought in as a backup option behind both Raphinha and Lamine Yamal, recurring injury problems for the duo saw Rashford end the season with 49 appearances across all competitions, tied for the third highest among any Barça player this term.

His impressive return of 14 goals and 14 assists is difficult to overlook. Only Yamal, Fermín López, and Raphinha recorded more goal contributions than Rashford's tally of 28, and the first two are the only players who outscored Rashford's five Champions League goals.

Rashford provided more than adequate cover for two of the finest wingers in world football, while also occasionally being deployed as a striker. A superb brace away at Newcastle United and a stunning free kick against Real Madrid that helped Barça seal the La Liga title in El Clásico rank among the standout moments of his season.

That said, it wasn't all smooth sailing; Rashford had his difficult spells this season. Beyond his undeniable output, he struggled to fully adapt to Hansi Flick's high-pressing system, with his work rate off the ball frequently questioned—especially in comparison to Raphinha's.

After a blistering start to the campaign, his goal contributions dried up as 2026 arrived. When Barcelona needed him most in the Champions League quarterfinals against Atlético Madrid following Raphinha's hamstring setback, Rashford failed to deliver, wasting several clear-cut chances in the first leg, which resulted in him featuring for just 22 minutes in the second leg as Barça's European journey came to an end.

He managed to restore some confidence during Barcelona's final stretch, contributing a goal or assist in three consecutive matches following Yamal's injury to help secure the La Liga title.

Inconsistency has been a hallmark of Rashford's recent years, and that pattern persisted during his time in Catalonia. Nevertheless, when switched on and at his best, he made meaningful contributions to the team's success and earned a place in England's 2026 World Cup squad.

On the whole, Rashford had a solid campaign, but was it convincing enough to leave Barcelona with no hesitation about triggering his buy option? Not quite.

The Hurdle of Barcelona's Finances

Marcus Rashford.

On paper, paying $35 million for a versatile backup winger capable of producing 28 goal contributions would be an easy decision for most top European clubs. However, Barcelona continue to be constrained by their long-running financial difficulties, and this is the central obstacle that could bring Rashford's time in Catalonia to an end after just one season.

Barcelona have yet to comply with La Liga's 1:1 financial rule ($1 spent for every $1 earned), and while the club anticipate meeting the regulation soon—a prediction they have made incorrectly before—they will still be operating under restrictions this summer.

Even with Rashford agreeing to a significantly reduced wage, the $35 million fee combined with his salary would be spread across the length of his contract through amortization. But with Rashford turning 29 in October, Barcelona may be reluctant to offer him a lengthy deal. This means his amortization cost could still exceed what the club would pay for a younger incoming winger, even if that player's transfer fee is higher than Rashford's.

While signing a winger remains a priority for Barça this summer, the primary objective is securing an elite center forward to fill the void left by Robert Lewandowski. Replacing a striker who averaged over 20 goals across his four seasons at the club will be no easy task—and certainly not an inexpensive one.

These financial constraints are precisely why Barcelona have so far failed in their attempts to negotiate a second loan arrangement with Man Utd. The will to keep Rashford is present, but the economics are making it increasingly complicated.

It appears the only path to retaining Rashford is to make him the second most expensive signing of the Flick era, behind only Dani Olmo. But is it truly worth it?

Final Decision

Marcus Rashford

Ultimately, there are additional factors Barcelona must weigh when arriving at a final decision on Rashford's future.

At no stage during the season did Rashford voice complaints or cause disruption regarding his role, particularly during periods when both Raphinha and Yamal were fit and his playing time was reduced—something that cannot be said for all squad members, notably fellow winger Roony Bardghji.

Rashford has reportedly settled well into Barcelona's dressing room, a fact further underlined by club vice-captain Frenkie de Jong publicly calling for Rashford to remain. Flick himself has spoken positively about Rashford despite wanting more from him, and reports indicate the German manager has given his backing for the transfer to be made permanent.

As was the situation last summer, Rashford is pushing hard and appears almost desperate to make Barcelona his long-term home.

At 28 years of age, Rashford still has plenty to contribute. His peak years may be behind him, but with one season at Barcelona now under his belt and free from the distraction of an uncertain future, it is easy to imagine him producing an even stronger campaign under Flick in 2026–27.

Barcelona know exactly what they have in Rashford. Bringing in a new player, regardless of age or potential, carries its own risks—particularly if they choose to invest heavily in a young winger. Moreover, if Barça opt for another experienced loan option, they will find themselves in the very same position this time next year.

A lack of quality depth became a genuine problem for Barcelona late in the season as injuries piled up, and Rashford provides precisely that kind of cover.

At some point, Barcelona must move away from short-term fixes and young players who, however promising, remain works in progress.

Unless activating Rashford's $35 million buy option prevents Barcelona from signing a world-class center forward, the club should make the England international their first permanent acquisition of the summer transfer window.
