Jack Grealish's Man City Future Hangs in Balance as Premier League Loan Talks Heat Up

Manchester City are currently in discussions with Everton regarding a possible loan arrangement for Jack Grealish, according to recent reports.
The 29-year-old's record-breaking £100 million ($133.1 million) move in 2021—which set a new British transfer benchmark at the time—has brought three Premier League championships, City's inaugural Champions League victory in 2023, and three additional major honors. However, over time, Grealish has found himself increasingly sidelined under Pep Guardiola's management, making only seven Premier League starts throughout the 2024–25 campaign.
The Athletic indicates that Everton, who distanced themselves from relegation danger last season following David Moyes' return as head coach, have initiated discussions with City regarding a potential temporary transfer—though the deal is characterized as being 'complex' to finalize.
The primary obstacle for Everton likely revolves around Grealish's salary, which various sources suggest could reach £300,000 ($400,000) weekly. This amount would be beyond the Toffees' financial capacity, requiring the versatile winger, who can also function centrally as an attacking midfielder, to accept reduced wages to make the transfer possible.

Grealish's limited playing time has resulted in his exclusion from the England squad—particularly missing out on Gareth Southgate's 26-man roster for Euro 2024—and he accumulated merely 1,521 minutes across all competitions in 2024–25; roughly equivalent to 17 complete matches.
Guardiola's decision to exclude Grealish from his Club World Cup selection indicates the player may not have a long-term future at the Etihad. The Spanish manager has previously acknowledged his winger's talents while also urging him to demonstrate he merits a more significant role within the team.
Grealish still has two years left on the six-year deal he agreed to when transferring from Aston Villa, and has been connected with potential moves overseas. Serie A titleholders Napoli, who acquired Kevin De Bruyne from City during the recent transfer window, have emerged as a possible landing spot.
