James Rodriguez Reveals Why MLS Became His Strategic World Cup Launchpad

James Rodríguez initially floated the concept of joining MLS back in 2022 during a Twitch stream while representing Al-Rayyan in Saudi Arabia. Four years down the line, that vision has materialized into reality.

This Friday,  the Colombian icon inked a temporary contract with Minnesota United, securing a team through the World Cup in June, with the Loons maintaining a club option to continue through December.

At 34 years of age, he disclosed that although his primary motivation for joining Minnesota was to prepare for the World Cup, he views achieving success with the midwestern club as equally important—despite no assurance he'll remain with the squad during the final push toward the MLS Cup playoffs.

"It's accurate that I've competed in numerous elite leagues, but I was eager to experience MLS. When the opportunity arose to discuss terms with Minnesota, I felt genuinely thrilled," he expressed through an interpreter on Friday. "I'm simply anticipating the chance to make a difference, because winning is something I'm passionate about, so I'm hoping to deliver victories for both the team and supporters."

For MLS, securing Rodríguez has been a long-standing objective. During his tenure with European powerhouses Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, he appeared destined to become one of football's elite talents. However, he won't fill a Designated Player position for Minnesota and joins following a disappointing Liga MX stint with Club Léon.

For Minnesota United, part of the appeal in acquiring Rodríguez stemmed from his talent and commercial appeal. Rodríguez gained prominence during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, where his six goals secured him the Golden Boot and created highlights that remain memorable over ten years later.

He swiftly converted that showing into a transfer to Real Madrid, where his career truly flourished. Throughout his career, he has appeared in 516 club matches, recording 127 goals and 161 assists.

"I'm enthusiastic about every player who joins Minnesota United; nevertheless, bringing in someone of this caliber, plus the legacy that encompasses both on-field and off-field elements, represents something special," stated Khaled El-Ahmad, Minnesota's chief soccer officer and sporting director.

"Someone shared a tweet showing his social media reach exceeds 50 million compared to major stars from our local [Minnesota] franchises. The gap is enormous and represents an additional benefit for me, but this centers on him as an individual, the football, and the squad."

Rodríguez's Instagram followers as of Friday totaled 51.7 million, surpassing the combined following of the Minnesota Vikings (NFL), Twins (MLB), Timberwolves (NBA), Wild (NHL), United (MLS),  Lynx (WNBA), and Frost (PWHL).

Simultaneously, a talent like Rodríguez could enable Minnesota to evolve its low-possession, counter-pressing approach into a more appealing style of play under new head coach Cameron Knowles, who begins his inaugural season on the sideline.

By joining Minnesota in early February, Rodríguez is providing himself sufficient time to complete the requirements necessary for his MLS debut. Initially, he'll require a U.S. work permit and Canadian visa, which are typically processed rapidly, followed by building match fitness during the remaining preseason period.

Minnesota ranks among several MLS teams traveling to the Coachella Valley Invitational in the coming week, with Rodríguez's availability for the friendly tournament still undecided. Nevertheless, his regular-season debut will likely occur in the Loons' season opener on Feb. 21 against Austin FC.

"I'm extremely pleased about this new phase of my career," Rodríguez added. "I hope to perform at my peak so I can bring happiness to this city and to everyone who believes in me.

"I'm eager to connect with all the devoted Minnesota supporters because I'm also a passionate competitor who aims to give everything on the pitch and consistently strives for victory."
