James Rodriguez Sidelined: The Real Reason Behind His Absence from Minnesota United's Clash with Austin FC

The highly anticipated debut of celebrated Colombian midfielder James Rodríguez with Minnesota United will not occur during Saturday evening's 2026 MLS season kickoff against Austin FC. The Loons must postpone unveiling their new number 10 jersey wearer.

At 34 years old, the 2014 World Cup standout inked a non-Designated Player contract running through June while pursuing a spot with Los Cafeteros for the 2026 World Cup. If circumstances align favorably, Minnesota holds an option to extend his agreement through the conclusion of the 2026 MLS campaign.

However, his fitness level remains insufficient, and per Andy Greder from the Twin Cities Pioneer Press, he remained absent from the Austin trip for Saturday's season launch against Austin FC, whose winter preparations were similarly highlighted by South American talent - Uruguayan World Cup prospect Facundo Torres.

James gradually integrated into Minnesota's training during their preseason's closing week and is anticipated to participate in complete practice sessions after the season opener. He continues building his conditioning, having last appeared in competitive club action during a November 8 match with Club Léon in Liga MX.

Though no specific debut timeline has been established, the team launches its home campaign at Allianz Field on February 28 facing FC Cincinnati in their second seasonal contest.

A Fresh Chapter for Minnesota United

Cameron Knowles

Following their fourth-place finish in the 2025 Western Conference standings, Minnesota executed significant roster transformations entering 2026. Cameron Knowles assumed managerial duties after Eric Ramsay departed for West Bromwich Albion in the EFL Championship, with James leading nine fresh signings.

Simultaneously, the organization bid farewell to 10 players, notably 2025 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year Dayne St. Clair, who subsequently joined Inter Miami, and crucial midfielder Robin Lod, now with the Chicago Fire.

To offset these departures, the Loons acquired their inaugural genuine superstar in franchise history, landing James, whom they anticipate can raise their competitive standard and rediscover his peak form in MLS, following limited consistent club involvement since his stint with Greek powerhouse Olympiacos during 2022-23.

"I'm at a point where failure isn't an option, where everything must be executed properly," James stated in Spanish during his February introductory press conference. "I'm completely concentrated on that objective. It's accurate, and everyone correctly identified that [World Cup preparation] represented a major factor enabling my arrival here. The organization clarified they can assist me with that goal."

Colombia will commence their 2026 World Cup campaign against Uzbekistan on June 17 at Mexico City's Estadio Azteca, before also meeting Portugal and an undetermined opponent in Group K competition.
