JJ Gabriel has for months been touted as Manchester United's next big thing. But, seemingly out of nowhere, the 15-year-old appears to be pushing for a surprise departure from Old Trafford.
Gabriel became the first player his age to feature for United when he came off the bench in a preseason fixture against Atlético Madrid. That unofficial outing didn't count in the record books, but the schoolboy attacker was on course to become the club's youngest-ever player, needing a competitive appearance before Oct. 25 to surpass David Gaskell's record set in 1956.
Last week, Gabriel netted a hat trick against Sabah in a dominant UEFA Youth League victory. He claimed last season's U-18 Premier League Player of the Year honor, despite being just 14 when the campaign kicked off. Gabriel was also the youngest-ever winner of the Jimmy Murphy Player of the Year award at Old Trafford, handed out each season to the club's top U-18 performer—previous recipients include Kobbie Mainoo, Marcus Rashford, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs.
In Premier League 2 this season, Gabriel has contributed two goals and two assists across two appearances, and his potential had led many to anticipate a bench spot for Wednesday's Carabao Cup clash with Brighton & Hove Albion. However, that now seems unlikely, and there is a genuine risk he could depart the club entirely.
Man Utd Don't Have to Accept JJ Gabriel 'Request'
Doubts about his future surfaced in recent days when all references to Manchester United vanished from his Instagram profile. Reports from correspondents at The Athletic and BBC Sport suggest Gabriel has formally requested that his registration with the club be terminated.
Gabriel is still too young to sign the two-year scholar agreement that precedes turning fully professional, and canceling his registration would instantly make him a free agent. That said, United also have the option to reject the request, as canceling a registration requires mutual agreement between the player, their parent/carer and the club.
According to reports, United have been caught off guard but remain hopeful that a resolution can still be found, with chief executive Omar Berrada and sporting director Jason Wilcox both involved in those efforts. If no agreement is reached, the Premier League may need to step in.
Why Does JJ Gabriel Want to Leave Man Utd?
There appears to be significant uncertainty from United's end about what has actually triggered this situation. BBC Sport points to "issues in the relationship between the player's family and United," while The Athletic and Sky Sports allude to frustration over Gabriel's playing opportunities. The latter notes that "part of the reasoning for Gabriel's request to leave is over game time, both in preseason and since the season started." There have been no concerns raised about his conduct in training.
The idea that a 15-year-old might be unhappy about playing time is hard to grasp when most players that age could only dream of being anywhere near first-team contention. Yet Lamine Yamal and, to a far lesser degree, Max Dowman, have shifted expectations in recent years.
Because his age prevents him from meeting the two-year history required for List B eligibility, Gabriel needed to be included on List A to feature in the Champions League, and Sky Sports suggests "there is a feeling" from his camp that others have been given better chances. Tynan Thompson, for instance, did make List A. The 18-year-old arrived from Tottenham Hotspur's academy over the summer and is a direct rival for Gabriel, who operates primarily as a left winger or No. 10. For context, Thompson has yet to be selected in a first-team matchday squad.
United believe "not much more could have been done" to show Gabriel that a route into the first team exists for him. Well before manager Michael Carrick was appointed midway through last season, Gabriel had already held meetings with former head coach Ruben Amorim and was even introduced to the iconic Sir Alex Ferguson. He had been training with the first team on a regular basis for much of the past year before his sudden absence from late last week.
What Impact Would JJ Gabriel's Exit Have?
In the immediate term, the impact may be limited. Manchester United have other teenage talents knocking on the first-team door, though none appear quite as electrifying as Gabriel. Thompson is one such option, while Liverpool's Isaac Konde, a 16-year-old winger, is set to become another before long.
But should Gabriel move on and go on to fulfill the extraordinary potential his reputation and ability suggest, it would stand as the ultimate 'one that got away.'
His next destination remains unclear. Gabriel was born in London, which immediately puts Arsenal and Chelsea in contention. The Gunners recently lured older academy players James Scanlon and Habeeb Ogunneye away from United. Manchester City or Liverpool, given that Gabriel is now based in the north-west of England, could also be realistic options closer to home—he turned down City back in 2025.
There is also rumored interest from abroad. Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich have, according to The Athletic, already made approaches for Gabriel. An overseas transfer may require a creative solution given that the U.K. is no longer part of the European Union (EU) or European Economic Area (EEA), where players can move between member states from the age of 16.
