Joao Pedro Sparks Stunning Chelsea Revival as Blues Battle Back Against Aston Villa

João Pedro's maiden Chelsea treble served as the centerpiece of an outstanding display that witnessed the Blues demolish Aston Villa 4–1 on Wednesday evening to revive their Champions League aspirations.

Supporters at Villa Park were barely seated when Douglas Luiz gave the home side an early advantage within three minutes. Chelsea rallied magnificently following the initial setback, with Pedro's double ensuring they entered halftime having already overturned the deficit.

Chelsea's control continued following the interval as Cole Palmer netted a third before Pedro sealed his treble to place the match firmly beyond Villa's reach.

Liam Rosenior's squad showed tremendous character under pressure and concluded a three-match winless streak with one of their finest displays this campaign. The victory propels them past Liverpool into fifth position, moving within three points of the rapidly declining Aston Villa.

The One Thing We Can't Ignore

The One Thing We Can't Ignore

João Pedro

Following countless seasons hunting for a clinical striker, Chelsea appear to have discovered precisely what they've been seeking in João Pedro. The brilliant Brazilian enjoyed a memorable evening against Aston Villa, netting his inaugural Chelsea treble and first Premier League hat-trick.

Chelsea invested $81.6 million (£60 million) to acquire the former Brighton forward last summer. Despite playing an instrumental role in Chelsea's 2025 Club World Cup victory immediately after his arrival, he experienced a somewhat subdued start to the season.

Everything transformed when Rosenior took charge of Chelsea's technical area. Pedro has now netted eight times in eight Premier League matches since the manager's arrival, appearing like one of the division's premier strikers. He also delivered a vital double against Napoli in the Champions League to help the Blues earn automatic qualification to the knockout stages.

Pedro has now reached 14 Premier League strikes this season, matching Nicolas Jackson's finest single-campaign tally with three months remaining in the schedule.

At just 24 years of age, Pedro has room for further development in upcoming seasons. However, if recent months indicate the quality of striker he can develop into—or perhaps already represents—Chelsea shouldn't have concerns about their attacking position for years to come.

*Ratings provided by FotMob*

GK: Filip Jörgensen—7.0: Experienced an anxious beginning and perhaps could have done better to prevent Villa's opener. Nevertheless, he settled into the match and produced several excellent stops, highlighted by a close-range, single-handed block of Ollie Watkins to prevent the Blues from falling two goals behind.

RB: Malo Gusto—7.6: The complete right flank was his domain with Palmer moving inward. Started awkwardly with some risky giveaways but concluded a solid performance with an excellent delivery to set up Chelsea's leveler.

CB: Wesley Fofana—6.6: His physical limitations were exposed as he repeatedly fell too readily. Struggled to provide assurance at the defensive core. Departed late clutching his hamstring in a concerning development.

CB: Trevoh Chalobah—7.3: Chalobah made several vital clearances where he rectified mistakes by teammates.

LB: Jorrel Hato—7.4: Extremely poor in his effort to prevent Leon Bailey from delivering the cross that resulted in the opening goal. Recovered afterward but his early error overshadowed his evening.

DM: Reece James—7.5: Generally among Chelsea's top performers though he'll regret Villa's opener passing between his legs and also made a terrible turnover that only the offside flag prevented from creating Villa's second.

DM: Moisés Caicedo—6.8: Unusually found himself out of position repeatedly. Chelsea were vulnerable to counter-attacks largely due to the Ecuadorian's below-par showing.

RW: Cole Palmer—8.6: Produced numerous threatening runs, incisive passes and dangerous attempts. Capped his excellent performance with a powerful strike from a loose ball to score his team's third.

AM: Enzo Fernández—8.0: Might have intervened to block the cross leading to Villa's early goal. He subsequently controlled Chelsea's build-up play with his superb long pass to Gusto creating Pedro's opener before threading an elegant assist for the Brazilian's second.

LW: Alejandro Garnacho—8.5: Appeared assured and consistently influential in one of his strongest performances this season. Earned an assist though he probably deserved more and could have scored himself.

ST: João Pedro—9.8: Contributed to all four goals on his special night. A truly exceptional performance from someone who could well be Chelsea's standout player this campaign.

SUB: Romeo Lavia (75' for Malo Gusto)—6.0: Wasn't required to exert himself much after entering and was content simply maintaining possession.

SUB: Marc Cucurella (79' for Fernández)—6.3: The perfect conclusion to Chelsea's display was the Spaniard's comeback from injury, appearing for the first time since Feb. 10.

SUB: Tosin Adarabioyo (79' for Fofana)—6.2: Had no defensive duties with the match already settled when he came on.

SUB: Andrey Santos (85' for Palmer)—N/A

SUB: Liam Delap (85' for Pedro)—N/A

Subs not used: Robert Sánchez (GK), Benoît Badiashile, Josh Acheampong, Marc Guiu.
