Jordan Henderson Sets Sights on Premier League Comeback Following Ajax Departure

Ajax have officially announced the exit of ex-Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson, with reports suggesting he's exploring a Premier League comeback to secure his place in England's World Cup roster.

Following his departure from Liverpool during summer 2023, Henderson made a highly contentious move to Saudi Arabian club Al Ettifaq, though his stint in the Middle East lasted merely six months before he rejoined European football with Ajax in January 2024.

Now, 18 months on, Henderson finds himself searching for a new team after Ajax revealed he chose not to activate a one-year contract extension option.

"I want to convey my tremendous appreciation to everyone connected with Ajax for providing me the chance to represent this remarkable club during recent years," Henderson stated.

"Playing for this organization was an honor by itself. Having the opportunity to lead it as captain was even more meaningful. My sole disappointment is that we couldn't achieve greater success for the incredible fans. They merit celebrating significant trophies once more, and I'm confident that moment will arrive soon.

"My loved ones and I felt incredibly welcomed, not only by the club but throughout the beautiful city of Amsterdam. We'll forever be thankful for that experience. Given the heartbreaking incidents from last week, and the terrible loss of my former colleague Diogo Jota and his sibling André Silva, it seems inappropriate right now to elaborate beyond sharing this concise message.

"Nevertheless, I fully recognize that I owe this club, my fellow players and the supporters a more comprehensive and heartfelt farewell. I will certainly provide that when circumstances feel more suitable. For the present, I wish to show my gratitude to Ajax again, along with everyone I didn't get to speak with personally yesterday, all those who make this club truly extraordinary."

Based on reports from The Athletic, Henderson is evaluating opportunities throughout Europe, with Premier League teams reportedly making contact. Other sources have suggested a potential return to his childhood club Sunderland following their promotion to England's premier division.

Henderson aims to secure a position in England's squad for the 2026 World Cup and seeks to join a competitive team that can provide consistent playing time.

The 35-year-old midfielder lost his England spot during the final period of Gareth Southgate's management but earned three caps under Thomas Tuchel during the March and June international windows.
