Jordi Alba Drops Bombshell About His Biggest MLS Shock Before Hanging Up His Boots
Jordi Alba was taken aback by the quality of Major League Soccer following his move to Inter Miami in 2023.
Alba's journey in MLS and with Miami is nearing its end, as the left-back enters his final series of matches in the 2025 MLS Cup playoffs.
Despite having signed a contract extension, the 36-year-old defender revealed his retirement plans for the fall, stepping back from his previous agreement. He will be joined by long-time teammate Sergio Busquets in retiring at the season's conclusion.
"I've been genuinely impressed, to be honest, by MLS's standard. It's expanding enormously," he stated in a conversation with SPORT. "They've recruited major stars and particularly young talent. From a physical standpoint, I believe it's an excellent league."
Alba Seeks to Conclude Career with Success

While silverware has proven elusive for Miami in 2025, missing out on the Supporters Shield, Leagues Cup, Concacaf Champions Cup and FIFA Club World Cup thus far this campaign, Alba has maintained his effectiveness at the MLS standard, as the league continues developing around him.
"Naturally, there are areas for enhancement," he continued. "But regardless, I'm delighted to have arrived here and discovered the quality I've encountered."
Alba and Miami are currently navigating the MLS Cup playoffs, hoping to mount a challenge for the league's top honor. The MLS Cup final is scheduled for Dec. 6. Should the Herons advance through all rounds and qualify, the final would also mark a send-off for Alba and Busquets. A triumphant conclusion to two illustrious careers.
Alba continues to be satisfied with the current situation despite the ambiguity surrounding his final appearance.
"In Europe, you're aware of when your last game will occur, but not here, since you could exit at any point, unless we advance to the final," Alba explained. "I'm savoring this concluding period with great passion, alongside my teammates, particularly the games, knowing they will be my final ones."
