Jordi Alba Makes Lightning-Fast Comeback to Professional Soccer
The comeback of Jordi Alba to football has been officially announced, just months after the Barcelona and Spain icon hung up his boots following Inter Miami's historic MLS Cup victory.
Alba has committed to taking part in Soccer Aid for UNICEF 2026, set for May 31 at London Stadium, the regular venue for Premier League side West Ham United.
The prestigious U.K. charity fixture returns for its ninth consecutive year since becoming an annual tradition in 2018—it originally took place every two years from 2006, when the legendary Diego Maradona participated, making this the 20th anniversary edition.
Alba will feature in the World XI squad for 2026, comprising celebrities and former professional players. Edwin van der Sar, Leonardo Bonucci, Jen Beattie and Ali Krieger are the sole ex-professionals—or 'Legends'—confirmed for the international lineup thus far.
Additional participants will be unveiled gradually, with the fixture still nearly three months away, though Nemanja Vidić, Rivaldo, David Trezeguet, Carlos Tevez and Kaylyn Kyle all featured in 2025.
Former England skipper Wayne Rooney returns once more for the home side, alongside previous teammates Joe Hart, Jermain Defoe and Theo Walcott, plus former Lionesses Jill Scott, Toni Duggan and Steph Houghton. Loki star Tom Hiddleston is listed among the celebrity members of England's squad.
Could Barcelona Still Use Alba?
Could Barcelona Still Use Alba?
Alba concluded his Barcelona tenure in 2023 following 459 matches across 11 seasons, capturing 17 titles during his stay. The left-back reconnected with Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets in Miami, achieving the ultimate success last season by claiming a Major League Soccer championship.
It served as a 'Last Dance' moment for Alba and Busquets, with both declaring their plans to retire upon the 2025 campaign's end … whenever that would be.
Alba reaches 37 this month, yet Barcelona's shortage of defensive options for the season's final phase presents concerns in Catalonia. Jules Koundé and Alejandro Balde both suffered injuries during Tuesday evening's Copa del Rey semifinal defeat to Atlético Madrid.

Adaptable João Cancelo has excelled since returning on loan from Al Hilal, though left-back Gerard Martín is already deputizing as a left-sided center-back in Andreas Christensen's absence. Ronald Araújo was the sole player able to operate at right-back on the substitutes' bench, and coverage on both flanks is becoming increasingly limited.
The situation wasn't aided by Eric García's suspension for the Atlético encounter—fortunately he will be available again.
Both Koundé and Balde require medical evaluation, but with Barcelona continuing their campaigns in La Liga and the Champions League, the fullback areas now look exceptionally exposed.
