Jose Mourinho Makes History by Signing Mexico's National Team Captain as His First El Tri Player

Mexican national team skipper Edson Álvarez has found a fresh destination, departing West Ham United in London to sign with Turkish Süper Lig powerhouse Fenerbahçe.
Álvarez saw his minutes diminish during the latter portion of the previous campaign after Graham Potter assumed control at West Ham. Following an impressive showing for Mexico during their triumphant 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup campaign, Álvarez returned to London only to discover he wasn't part of Potter's blueprint for the 2025–26 campaign.
Several clubs were said to be pursuing him, but ultimately, West Ham and Fenerbahçe struck a loan arrangement featuring a purchase clause for next summer that would allow Álvarez to permanently join the Turkish outfit. The Mexican skipper had opportunities to weigh his options, but per Fabrizio Romano, Mourinho was instrumental in Álvarez's decision to choose Fenerbahçe.
The Club América youth product will make history as the first Mexican player to work under Mourinho's guidance. Álvarez excels as a defensive midfielder, winning tackles, collecting loose balls, never hesitating to make tough challenges, and possessing the versatility to operate in defensive positions as well.
While working with one of football's most accomplished tacticians should prove invaluable, departing the Premier League might be viewed as a backward step. At 27 years of age, Álvarez must capitalize on this chance or his stint among Europe's top tier could be approaching its conclusion.
Nevertheless, a departure from West Ham was essential. With the 2026 FIFA World Cup less than twelve months away, Álvarez requires regular match action for both his development and Mexico's benefit. 'El Machín' arrives at Fenerbahçe expecting consistent starting opportunities. Additionally, he'll participate in European competition, as the team is currently competing in Champions League qualifying rounds. At minimum, they'll feature in the Europa League should they fall short of qualification.
Álvarez becomes the fifth Mexican footballer to compete in Turkey's top flight, joining Sergio Almaguer, Antonio De Nigris, Giovani Dos Santos, and Diego Reyes.
Already presented as Fenerbahçe's new number 11, Álvarez might make his debut next Wednesday against Benfica in the Champions League qualification final's return leg.
