Jose Mourinho's 'Surreal' Secret Viewing Spot During Real Madrid vs. Benfica Ban

José Mourinho stayed away from the global media spotlight during Benfica's Champions League exit against Real Madrid on Wednesday evening, allegedly observing the game from the team coach after misleading gathered reporters on what was described as a "bizarre" evening.

Mourinho received a red card in the first leg of the knockout round tie the previous week, following an angry outburst after Vinicius Junior's spectacular strike and the supposed racist comments from one of his Benfica players that emerged after the Brazilian's appeal to the match official.

This resulted in a sideline ban for the second leg in Madrid, which should have marked his initial return to the Bernabéu in 4,652 days—since leaving his position as Los Blancos head coach in 2013.

Mourinho was prohibited from watching the game from the dugout or any location near the technical zone. According to MARCA, a viewing area in the press section eight levels above was designated for the Benfica manager, positioned close to where Benfica's official radio broadcast was being established.

His anticipated appearance generated predictable excitement among reporters eager to capture photographs for global distribution—UEFA representatives reportedly then requested that Mourinho not be recorded. However, the 63-year-old Portuguese coach never appeared, well after kickoff and as goals began to accumulate.

It was subsequently disclosed that he remained on Benfica's team coach throughout the entire match.

This approach was certainly less deceptive than Mourinho's notorious incident of concealing himself in a laundry hamper to avoid detection by UEFA officials when banned from stadium entry during a 2005 Champions League quarterfinal first leg between Chelsea and Bayern Munich.

Mourinho has tarnished his standing following the Vinicius Jr controversy, implying that the Brazilian provoked the circumstances he encountered and inappropriately invoking the memory of the late, respected Benfica icon Eusébio as a misguided justification for Gianluca Prestianni that made no sense.

Mourinho refused to allow his player to bear responsibility. However, following an allegedly reprehensible incident, it demonstrated poor judgment of the situation, particularly when Luisão, another Benfica icon, expressed being "embarrassed" by Prestianni's conduct.

The former Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester United boss, who was previously Europe's darling but now only has the UEFA Conference League title to demonstrate from the past nine years, faced criticism from a Benfica supporter for not properly acknowledging the accusation made.

"The response afterward was excessive," the fan, Ricardo Silva, stated to The Athletic.

"He is an icon of Portuguese football but I dislike the notion of people believing he represents me. I'll remain a [Benfica] supporter for many years but he will be here briefly and has dishonored the reputation of Benfica and of Eusébio."

With Benfica eliminated from the Champions League, Portuguese Cup and Portuguese League Cup, plus sitting seven points behind Primeira Liga frontrunners Porto, the 2025–26 season will most likely conclude without silverware. His agreement with Benfica, the club he departed abruptly in 2000 due to a contractual disagreement, extends until 2027.

Whether Mourinho survives that duration is uncertain, as is his potential next destination. No longer considered for top-tier club positions and increasingly compelled to accept more demanding roles at lower levels, it has long been speculated he might transition to international football.

The Portugal position will become available following the World Cup, with Roberto Martínez departing, and Mourinho is favored to secure it. This appeared to be a relatively certain outcome just days earlier, but only time will reveal if he has compromised his prospects through recent events.
