Julián Alvarez has been one of the central figures of the summer transfer window, yet with Barcelona and Arsenal still pursuing his services, the Argentine made his seasonal debut for Atlético Madrid over the weekend and was met with whistles, boos and insults from his own supporters.
Despite being Barcelona's top transfer priority throughout the summer, and Alvarez himself issuing a public transfer request during the 2026 World Cup in an attempt to force his way out, he pulled on Atléti's jersey on Saturday in their home opener against Villarreal—and it unfolded exactly as one might have anticipated.
From the instant his name was announced by the stadium PA as the Atlético squad was being introduced on the screens, Rojiblanco supporters made their frustration toward the striker crystal clear with a chorus of jeers directed his way. Matters only deteriorated once he entered the field from the bench and delivered an underwhelming 24-minute substitute appearance.
The defining moment came after the final whistle. While Atlético Madrid players went over to acknowledge the supporters, Alvarez turned and headed straight to the dressing room. Diego Simeone confirmed post-match that Alvarez's early exit from the pitch was a club decision, yet the entire episode only poured more fuel onto an already blazing fire.
Atléti have refused to consider Alvarez's departure throughout this summer, but with the striker's relationship with the club and its fanbase appearing completely broken, could there still be one final twist in the saga before the September 1 transfer deadline?
Dream Move to Barcelona Essentially Vetoed
Many had assumed that Barcelona signing Alvarez as Robert Lewandowski's successor was virtually a done deal heading into the summer, but Atlético Madrid had entirely different intentions.
The Catalan club reportedly submitted an opening bid of $116 million (€100 million) back in May, which Atlético publicly dismissed with a string of pointed social media posts.
Since then, and regardless of the striker's barely concealed hints at his wish to join Hansi Flick's squad, Atlético have made it unequivocally clear that they will not sanction his departure to their La Liga rivals. CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marín went so far as to state they would not sell Alvarez even if a €200 million offer were placed on the table.
Barcelona remain interested in the Argentine and have yet to secure a center forward, with Ferran Torres following Lewandowski out the exit door. Without a recognized striker, Flick's side began the season with Raphinha, the club's primary left winger of recent seasons, leading the attack.
The Catalans hinted at their intention to sign a forward in the closing week of the transfer window, but unless there is a dramatic change in Atlético's position, pessimism continues to grow over their chances of actually landing their top target of the summer.
Arsenal Are The Escape Route, But Alvarez Seems Reluctant
Arsenal have been watching from the sidelines, allowing the drama of the Alvarez saga between Barcelona and Atléti to take center stage, but the Premier League champions remain interested in the Argentine and appear ready to act should the right opportunity arise.
According to ESPN, the 26-year-old attacker is Arsenal's top priority in the final week of the window, and the club would be prepared to make him their most expensive signing in history, surpassing the $143 million spent on Declan Rice three summers ago.
Atlético would also be more receptive to allowing Alvarez to depart for the Premier League rather than to a direct domestic rival. Further reporting from The Athletic suggests that an Arsenal bid of $174.8 million (€150 million) represents the only realistic pathway for Alvarez to leave the Spanish capital this summer.
However, the Gunners reportedly want the player's representatives to signal their genuine interest in joining the club before entering into formal negotiations. That has not yet occurred, with Alvarez still focused solely on a move to Barcelona, and additional reports indicating the former Manchester City star is not particularly drawn to a potential return to the Premier League.
Unless Alvarez decides that leaving Atlético Madrid by any means necessary is his primary objective in the window's final week, a move to north London appears just as unlikely as one to Catalonia.
Atlético Madrid Close to Winning Alvarez Transfer Saga
Atlético Madrid have publicly maintained that Alvarez is not available for transfer since the beginning of the summer. There was a feeling their position might soften if a substantial offer arrived or if the player formally requested to leave, but nothing has shifted Los Rojiblancos and they are now days away from holding firm on their word.
Unsettled players are frequently left out of squads while there remains a possibility of departure. Even with a hostile reception anticipated, it says a great deal that Alvarez was actually included against Villarreal.
Atlético appear comfortable retaining a discontented player who publicly expressed his desire to leave and has become something of a villain in the eyes of their own supporters. The relationship looks entirely fractured, yet Simeone appears to be attempting to turn the page and repair the strained situation.
"Miguel [Gil Marín] spoke clearly yesterday," Simeone said ahead of Atléti's home opener. "I'm on the same page I've always been: Julián is a very important player for us to achieve the objectives we have as a team. We need him, we're going to look after him and we are going to stand by him."
Following the hostile reception Alvarez endured from his own fans in the stands, Simeone stood firm. "If Atlético Madrid want to win a title, we need to be united, we need strikers and we need important strikers."
Alvarez wanted to depart for Barcelona while Atlético Madrid were determined to keep him at the club. After months of scrutiny, tension and uncertainty, Atlético are on the verge of winning the saga.
