The summer transfer window may have shut, but the Julián Alvarez drama continues to simmer.
Barcelona star Dani Olmo admits he simply can't "understand what's happening with Atlético Madrid," while Real Madrid boss José Mourinho says he struggles to see how Alvarez gets any playing time before Jan. 1 if he remains unhappy at the club.
Alvarez made no secret of his desire to join the reigning Spanish champions, even going as far as making a public appeal for Atlético to allow him to leave ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Los Rojiblancos stood firm at every opportunity, refusing to release their star striker to a direct rival despite four years remaining on his deal.
Even a last-minute approach from Arsenal failed to pull Alvarez's heart away from Barcelona. Atlético held their ground throughout, retaining the Argentine at the Metropolitano, where hostile receptions from the home faithful seem inevitable going forward.
Barcelona had been keen to bring in Alvarez as their first-choice No. 9 following the departures of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres, but ultimately walked away empty-handed. The club turned to Gabriel Jesus as an alternative, and Olmo appears unbothered by the missed opportunity — unlike Alvarez himself.
"He's a fantastic player, one of the finest in the world," Olmo said of Alvarez on Wednesday. "That's just football. Some things work out and some don't. The club has done an outstanding job in the transfer market.
"I don't understand what's going on with Atlético. We all have our dreams. Julián was open about his and fought hard for them, but there are outside factors that are beyond anyone's control. Life moves on and football doesn't stop. I'm confident we're heading into a very strong year."
José Mourinho Weighs in on Alvarez Situation
A transfer saga as high-profile and turbulent as Alvarez's drew attention well beyond just Atlético and Barcelona. Real Madrid manager José Mourinho was asked to share his thoughts on the situation Thursday, and the Portuguese tactician was characteristically blunt.
"Nobody knows him better than Simeone, nobody understands the club better than Simeone, and I don't think he has anything to prove regarding this situation," Mourinho said at his pre-match press conference.
"What I always say is that when a player is unhappy, by September 1 he either becomes happy or he doesn't play until January 1. That's why my sense is that from yesterday, from yesterday, and at least through December 31, he will be a key contributor for his club."
Real Madrid had a minor role in Alvarez's transfer story this summer. The 15-time European champions submitted a seemingly insincere $173.2 million (€150 million) offer for the 26-year-old, which Atlético swiftly turned down. The general belief was that Los Blancos made the move purely to inflate the asking price for Barcelona.
What's Next for Alvarez at Atlético Madrid?
With the summer window now firmly closed, Alvarez must redirect his attention toward Atlético. Simeone's side are already playing catch-up to Barcelona and Real Madrid at the top of the table after dropping points against Villarreal.
Los Rojiblancos face Athletic Club next on Saturday, before traveling to Anfield to face Liverpool in their Champions League campaign opener.
Whether Alvarez will feature prominently in either fixture remains unclear. He has logged just 24 minutes of action this season, and in his sole appearance, was met with a deeply hostile response from Atlético supporters.
A path toward reintegration seems likely on the horizon, though the extent of it remains uncertain — particularly if Alvarez begins eyeing a potential January exit from the Spanish capital.
