Justified or Outrageous? Experts Deliver Their Verdict on Gravenberch's Controversial Red Card Against Man City

The Premier League's Key Match Incidents Panel has concluded that the red card issued to Ryan Gravenberch during the match against Manchester City earlier this month was the right call.

Already a highly charged fixture as it marked City's first game since the Premier League's public announcement of a guilty verdict regarding years of financial violations, Gravenberch was sent off by referee Chris Kavanagh in the 62nd minute following two bookable offenses.

The match was level at 0–0 at that point. However, capitalizing on the numerical advantage, City quickly broke the deadlock through Erling Haaland just three minutes later, and had netted three times within 16 minutes of Liverpool being reduced to ten men.

Andoni Iraola was slow to react tactically to the dismissal, only bringing on the more defensively oriented Trey Nyoni in place of Florian Wirtz after Liverpool had already conceded. City's second goal, scored by Jérémy Doku, then arrived almost immediately, before Liverpool had properly adjusted to their new formation.

Nevertheless, there was a strong feeling of grievance from Liverpool's side, as the initial yellow card shown to Gravenberch was considered excessive and "not a yellow" in Iraola's assessment.
