Manchester United have outlined the next chapter of Kai Rooney's promising soccer journey, with hopes that the 16-year-old will carve out a path similar to that of his legendary father, Wayne.
Rooney Sr. stands as Old Trafford's all-time top scorer following a 13-year stint at United from 2004 to 2017. His tally of 253 goals eclipsed the previous benchmark of 249 held by club great Sir Bobby Charlton, a record that had remained untouched for 44 years since 1973. He also claimed 12 major honours during his time there, including five Premier League crowns and the Champions League.
His son, Kai, joined Manchester United's academy setup in 2020 at the age of 11 and has made a strong impression as he has progressed through the youth ranks. Rooney Jr. was just 15 when he made his debut for the club's U-18s side last summer, and even featured at Old Trafford for the first time in an FA Youth Cup fixture in January, with his father watching from the stands.
Kai is now among 15 players — all turning 16 before the start of the 2026–27 academic year — to be awarded first-year scholar status, the opening half of a two-season scholarship that serves as the bridge between academy football and senior soccer.
The young striker will reach his 17th birthday a few months into the program's second year, which marks the earliest point at which he could be offered his first professional contract, provided the club feels he has earned it. The conclusion of the two-year scholarship represents a pivotal moment in any young player's development, as not every scholar will progress to the U-21s squad on professional terms — some will be let go.
Kai Rooney is not the only son of a Manchester United legend in this scholar intake, as Michael Carrick's son — Jacey, also 16 and a defensive midfielder — is also part of the group.
Last season's first-year scholars will advance into their second year, and the two cohorts combined will make up the club's U-18s squad for the upcoming season, under the management of Darren Fletcher.

What Kind of Player is Kai Rooney?

Wayne Rooney is a devoted spectator of all his sons on the soccer field — Klay (born 2013) is also in the Manchester United academy, while his youngest, Cass (born 2018), plays in Everton's junior setup. Kit (born 2016) has stepped away from soccer and is said to have taken up darts instead.
However, the former England skipper is careful not to interfere too much or come across as an overbearing parent. "I just let him play," Rooney said of Kai specifically to the BBC in 2025. "He has great coaches at Manchester United, so I take a hands-off approach. I speak to him, but for me it's all about his mentality and his mindset, to make sure he keeps enjoying it — that's the main thing for me."
Regarding his style of play, Rooney Sr. said on Stick to Football in 2024: "[He has] my physique, but he'll be taller than me and he's a goalscorer, he's in the box, he sniffs chances out and that's his game."
More recently, a photo of the Rooneys outside Old Trafford shared on Instagram this month revealed that Kai is already nearly the same height as his father, who stands at 5'9".
What Father-Son Duos Have Played for Man Utd?

A father and son both pursuing professional soccer careers is not uncommon, and some of the more well-established footballing families span three or even four generations.
Many Manchester United stars have had sons who went on to become players in their own right, though not all of them passed through Old Trafford. Early Premier League stalwarts Peter Schmeichel, Steve Bruce, and Paul Ince all had sons — Kasper, Alex, and Thomas, respectively — who became professionals, yet none of them ever represented the Red Devils.
The most recent instance of it actually occurring at the club is Darren Fletcher and his twin sons, Jack and Tyler, who combined for five first-team appearances last season.

Yet on only one other occasion in Manchester United's 148-year history has a father played for the club and later been followed by his son. That was John Aston Sr. and John Aston Jr., and remarkably, both won league titles as United players 16 years apart.
Aston Sr. established himself as a left back in the first team Matt Busby assembled after World War II, lifting the FA Cup in 1948 and the 1951–52 league title. Aston Jr. broke into the side in 1965, claiming the 1966–67 championship and delivering a standout performance in the 1968 European Cup final on the left wing.
