Kalvin Phillips Set for Stunning Man City Exit as Loan Deal Reaches Final Stages

Overlooked Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips is set to complete the current campaign with Championship side Sheffield United, following reports of a surprising loan arrangement being finalized.

Phillips made his debut City outing in nearly two years this past September when he played the closing seven minutes of a Carabao Cup victory against Huddersfield Town. However, that remains the ex-England midfielder's sole match this term, having been unable to revive his career during a stint at Ipswich Town in 2024–25 that was cut short due to injury.

Nevertheless, Phillips will now get the chance to return to regular football by moving down a tier. The Athletic reports that a simple loan without a purchase clause has been arranged with Sheffield United, subject to passing a medical examination. The deal will extend through the summer.

The Blades are currently struggling in the lower half of the Championship standings, positioned nearer to relegation than the promotion spots. However, Phillips, who earned England Men's Player of the Year honors following his displays at Euro 2020, possesses significant experience in this division from his time with Leeds United.

Regrettably for Phillips, his transfer to Manchester City has derailed his career trajectory. While it seemed like an ideal opportunity initially, being chosen to join the defending Premier League champions, he required shoulder surgery just weeks into his debut campaign and never fully recovered.

Despite this setback, he was still chosen for the 2022 World Cup squad by Gareth Southgate, only for Pep Guardiola to publicly declare the player was "overweight" upon returning to Manchester following the tournament, though the manager later apologized. His City tenure never bounced back.

The extended contract Phillips signed upon joining from Leeds in a £45 million ($61.4 million) transfer during summer 2022 astonishingly still has two additional seasons remaining beyond this one, and City cannot easily terminate it until 2028.

A significant issue is that Phillips earns wages far exceeding his current playing level. No Championship team could afford his reported £150,000 weekly salary. While it's his entitlement to claim this amount—valued at nearly £8 million annually—for his family's financial stability, City may need to provide a settlement or compensation to mutually terminate his contract earlier.

This makes the Bramall Lane transfer merely a short-term solution, though it could showcase the 30-year-old for a permanent move before the 2026–27 season.

Following three years of struggles, including challenging periods at West Ham United, Ipswich, and then failing to secure a new club for the first half of 2025–26, there's minimal motivation for teams to risk signing him, creating a difficult pattern to escape.
