Kane Blasts Past Messi's Milestone and Sets His Sights on Ronaldo's Legendary Record

Harry Kane had featured in League One, warmed the bench for Leicester City, and was repeatedly passed over at Tottenham Hotspur in favor of failed signing Roberto Soldado before he even made his Champions League debut. Once he was finally handed his opportunity on club football's biggest stage, he has wasted no time catching up.

The Spurs icon consistently delivered goals despite the Premier League club's shortcomings, and his numbers have skyrocketed since moving to a genuine title contender in Bayern Munich. Kane had already turned 30 when he arrived in Germany, making his remarkable output in the twilight of his career even more extraordinary.

After netting a brace for Bayern in Tuesday's wild 3–3 stalemate with Viking, Kane's tally now reads 36 goals in 40 Champions League appearances since reaching the age of 30. For context, the iconic Bayern Munich forward Gerd Müller accumulated 34 European Cup goals throughout his entire career—as did Kane's fellow Englishman Wayne Rooney.

To truly appreciate how remarkable Kane's record is, even Lionel Messi could only manage 35 Champions League goals after his 30th birthday.

Kane Two Games Away From Ronaldo's All-Time Record

Cristiano Ronaldo celebrating.

As Cristiano Ronaldo would surely be eager to highlight, the former Real Madrid, Juventus and Manchester United striker accumulated 68 Champions League goals in 74 outings after his 30th birthday. Kane still has considerable ground to cover to surpass that benchmark, but the Bayern Munich striker is just two matches away from equaling another Ronaldo milestone.

Kane has now found the net in nine straight Champions League appearances, a sequence only Ronaldo has ever managed to exceed since the competition's relaunch in 1992. The England captain's run dates back to January with a double against Union Saint-Gilloise and continued throughout Bayern's entire knockout campaign, including both losing semifinal legs against Paris Saint-Germain.

Bayern's next opponents are one of Kane's preferred targets: Arsenal. The former Gunners academy castaway turned Spurs legend has scored 15 goals against his long-standing north London adversaries. "Arsenal are a formidable side and I've had many memorable battles with them over the years," Kane reflected earlier this month. "I can't completely set aside that history, but I've also faced Arsenal with Bayern on several occasions now. The most important thing for me is doing my job and helping the team win."

Should Kane keep his impressive streak alive, he could fittingly equal Ronaldo's record in Madrid. Atlético host Bayern on Nov. 3 at the ground where Kane suffered his most painful moment in the competition back in 2019, struggling through a Champions League final loss to Liverpool while carrying an injury.
