Harry Kane has claimed that his 2026 Ballon d'Or triumph was a reflection of voters favoring his complete, well-rounded style of play over the flashy brilliance of Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal.
This year's award contest remained unpredictable until the very last moment, with Bayern Munich's Kane eventually holding off Mbappé by a narrow margin of just 28 points—the fourth-closest race in the award's history.
While both Mbappé and Yamal are renowned for their extraordinary abilities, Kane maintained that his win came down to the "less spectacular" elements of his game that voters ultimately deemed more worthy.
"I know that the Ballon d'Or sometimes goes to the player who has something extraordinary, someone who can change a game with a dribble, their pace or a stunning move," Kane told L'Équipe. "But that's also what makes this Ballon d'Or so meaningful to me: I feel that the voters recognized that football is built on many different components.
"I know I'm not the type of player who'll beat 10 men before finding the net, but I can damage teams in a variety of ways. It's also crucial to know how to help the team defend set pieces, block shots or track back when the opposition breaks forward. I'm willing to take on all those less glamorous duties.
"This award acknowledges that effort too. A team is at its best when its top players are also prepared to carry out all those responsibilities. That means a great deal, particularly for the younger generation watching us. So I see this Ballon d'Or as recognition for all those less eye-catching aspects of the game, which I'm very proud to embrace."
Kane: Ballon d'Or Win Will Change My Legacy

Since his move to Bayern Munich in the summer of 2023, Kane has undeniably transformed the narrative that had shadowed him throughout the earlier stages of his career.
Although long regarded as a world-class striker, his inability to guide Tottenham Hotspur to any major silverware became a source of ridicule, with many questioning whether Kane could ever lead a side to glory. That conversation has now been put to rest.
Back-to-back Bundesliga titles elevated his standing considerably, and Kane anticipates yet another leap in his legacy after being named the finest player on the planet.
"Last season, beyond my strong statistics, people really began to appreciate the full picture of my game: my passing, my ability to drop deep, creating space for teammates, my defensive work, my tracking back to support the team, and contributing in so many different ways," he explained. "As a No. 9, I don't think there are many strikers who can operate across so many different positions.
"When I was growing up, I played in midfield, in defense, pretty much everywhere. That experience taught me how to function in different roles. Maybe it will inspire more young players to do the same. I mentioned in a press conference that one day we might see systems where players don't have fixed positions at all. They'd simply be on the pitch, able to adapt to any scenario. Perhaps that's the future of football—played with intelligence and a deep understanding of the game. I just need to keep demonstrating all my qualities at the highest level. Time will tell how I'll ultimately be remembered.
"Probably, yes [this will shift people's perception], especially in how the world views me and my career. We live in an era where this type of award matters to people and shapes their opinion of a player's caliber.
"No one can ever take this moment or this season away from me. I believe winning accolades like this earns you the respect of your peers and the supporters. That's without question.
"That said, I don't think it changes my mentality. Whatever I achieve, I always push to go further. What else can I accomplish? Can I win back-to-back Ballon d'Or awards? That's always the way I think."
